SUMMARY:Lady Chatterley’s Cover: The Book Designs of Stephen Russ
DESCRIPTION:The post-war book designs of artist and teacher\, Stephen Russ\, are coming to life at Chippenham Museum. \nFrom the forties to the seventies\, Russ produced dozens of dust jackets\, from striking first editions of Graham Greene at Bodley Head to a wide range of titles at Collins\, including nature books and the famous Collins Crime Club. \nHe is perhaps best known for his work with Penguin\, designing covers for the main orange series\, the lesser-known music scores\, and the highly collectible Penguin Poets series. His phoenix motif for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover became famous during the 1960 obscenity trial and featured in the marketing that helped make the book a bestseller. \nThe exhibition also celebrates Russ’s thirty-year career as a tutor at the renowned Bath Academy of Art in Corsham\, brought together with the generous support of the Russ family and loans from the Penguin Archive and the University of Bristol.

DESCRIPTION:Discover the beauty of plants through gentle observation and watercolour in this relaxed and inspiring botanical illustration workshop. You’ll learn how to look closely at leaves\, stems\, flowers\, and seed heads\, and translate what you see into a clear\, elegant watercolour illustration. \nWe’ll explore approachable techniques for drawing and painting botanical subjects\, with guidance on line\, shape\, proportion\, and colour. You’ll learn how to layer washes\, add fine details\, and create an illustration that feels both delicate and confident – perfect for capturing the character of a plant without needing scientific precision. \nThere will be a selection of plant and botanical reference images on the table\, and you’re welcome to bring a favourite leaf or flower of your own to paint. You can work at your own pace\, with as much or as little guidance as you’d like. \nThis workshop is beginner-friendly and low-pressure\, designed to be enjoyable and encouraging rather than technical or intimidating. By the end of the session\, you’ll have your own finished botanical illustration to frame\, gift\, or keep\, along with an Introduction to Watercolour booklet to help you continue exploring watercolour painting at home. \nWe’ll have exclusive use of The Waverley’s spacious main upstairs room\, and a complimentary drink of your choice is included in your ticket. \nAll materials are provided (or feel free to bring your own favourites)\, and no prior drawing experience is needed – just curiosity\, a love of nature\, and a willingness to experiment!

SUMMARY:The Fureys: Farewell Tour
DESCRIPTION:After three previous performances at the Neeld\, the Fureys will play their last ever concert here as part of their Farewell Tour on Saturday 18th April 2026. \nLegends of Irish music & song\, the Fureys are renowned for their hit songs\, including ‘I Will Love You’\, ‘When You Were Sweet Sixteen’\, ‘The Green Fields of France’\, ‘The Old Man’\, ‘Red Rose Café’\, ‘From Clare to Here’\, ‘Her Father Didn’t Like Me Anyway’\, ‘Leaving Nancy’ and ‘Steal Away’\, which they will perform as they take to our stage for the final time. \nThe oldest of the brothers\, Eddie Furey\, left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival\, where he met and shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty. \nIn 1972\, Gerry Rafferty wrote ‘Her Father Didn’t Like Me Anyway’ for Eddie. BBC Radio 1 presenter\, the late John Peel\, made it his single of the year. \nThey are particularly proud of their UK chart success with songs such as ‘I Will Love You’ and ‘When You Were Sweet Sixteen’\, which in turn helped bring Irish folk and traditional music to a completely new audience. The band made their Top of the Pops debut in 1981. \nEddie Furey recalls how “many musicians have told us we influenced them after hearing a record from their parents or grandparents’ collection”. Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar while still a teenager. Eddie would return the compliment by joining Dave on stage in Paris for a jam during Dave’s wedding to Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey. \nTheir songs stir many emotions: tears and laughter\, sadness and joy. \nTickets: £29 \nDuration: 140 minutes\, including 20 minute interval \nPlease contact the venue for any access requirements. \nTickets are also available through our Box Office on 01249 446699\, from the Neeld Box Office or at the Town Hall. \nTickets are non-refundable unless this event is cancelled or postponed.
