SUMMARY:Lady Chatterley’s Cover: The Book Designs of Stephen Russ
DESCRIPTION:The post-war book designs of artist and teacher\, Stephen Russ\, are coming to life at Chippenham Museum. \nFrom the forties to the seventies\, Russ produced dozens of dust jackets\, from striking first editions of Graham Greene at Bodley Head to a wide range of titles at Collins\, including nature books and the famous Collins Crime Club. \nHe is perhaps best known for his work with Penguin\, designing covers for the main orange series\, the lesser-known music scores\, and the highly collectible Penguin Poets series. His phoenix motif for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover became famous during the 1960 obscenity trial and featured in the marketing that helped make the book a bestseller. \nThe exhibition also celebrates Russ’s thirty-year career as a tutor at the renowned Bath Academy of Art in Corsham\, brought together with the generous support of the Russ family and loans from the Penguin Archive and the University of Bristol.

SUMMARY:Collection Conversations: Alma Boyes & Helen Harris
DESCRIPTION:In May’s installment of the museum’s free art talk series\, they will be joined Alma Boyes and Helen Harris. \nAlma Boyes studied ceramics and sculpture at the Bath Academy of Art\, Corsham\, and a Masters in Ceramic Design at North Staffordshire Polytechnic. Boyes worked as a sculptor and enlarger at the Morris Singer Foundry\, working on sculptures for prominent artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi\, as well as making her own work in bronze. Her work both in ceramics and bronze has been heavily influenced by her early days exploring ceramic techniques at the Bath Academy of Art. \nHelen Harris studied visual communication at the Bath Academy of Art\, Corsham\, becoming a Fellow in Photography in 1981-2. She taught photography at Corsham and Central Saint Martins\, continuing to teach at Bath Spa University until 2020. Her photographic practice explores the experience of time and place\, with a particular focus on the weaving of cultural and natural histories within the landscape of the South West of England. Walking and collecting are an integral part of her process. In these encounters she is drawn to the poetry of the local and commonplace and its capacity to speak of other times and worlds. \nFree\, booking essential. \nImage captions:\nLeft Image: Lone Magpie\, undated\, Alma Boyes\, agateware in porcelain\nRight Image: Corsham Court\, Wiltshire\, February 1982\, 1982\, Helen Harris\, photographic print

SUMMARY:FUNdraising Event at Pewsham Community Centre on Saturday 9th May 2026
DESCRIPTION:A fun afternoon of various activities and fundraising is open to all to raise vital funds for local charity Dorothy House Hospice Care and the Multiple System Atrophy Trust. \nOrganisers Sue\, Emma and Sue say;\nWe wanted to do something for charity and put some good back into the world\, so we got together and ultimately decided to support these two very deserving charities that are close to our hearts. \nWe all know the fantastic work Dorothy House at Winsley does. We wanted to support a local charity and chose them as we have all had personal experience of the vital work they do\, and in these austere times local fundraising and community support is needed by them more than ever. \nMultiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a little known\, rare and devastating progressive neurological condition which affects all of the body’s basic functions. It is a terminal illness as there is currently no cure. This disorder has sadly struck the sister of one of us\, hence the very personal reason and our desire to raise funds for this cause too. The MSA Trust is the only charity in the UK and The Republic of Ireland dedicated to supporting people affected by MSA and funding vital research to find the cause and\, ultimately\, hopefully a cure. As a small charity that receives no Government support\, they rely entirely on fundraisers like us in the community and charitable donations to continue their vital work and also raise awareness of this life-changing condition. \nFor more details and ongoing updates about the event see our Facebook page:\nFUNdraising Event at Pewsham Community Hall in Chippenham on 9th May 2026 | Facebook \nIf you are kindly able to like\, share and follow us too so we can continue to spread the word about this it would be much appreciated\, thank you! \nIf you can’t get there on the day\, live further afield or would just like to support alongside the event\, in tandem with the day we also have an online donation page up and running at givewheel.com\, our specific link is:\nhttps://gvwhl.com/YQU38 \nAny support at all you can give in any way will be very gratefully received and if you can attend our event itself we would love to see you. \nFor further information please email: charityevent2026@yahoo.com \nOr call: 07510 378995 \n
