SUMMARY:Lady Chatterley’s Cover: The Book Designs of Stephen Russ
DESCRIPTION:The post-war book designs of artist and teacher\, Stephen Russ\, are coming to life at Chippenham Museum. \nFrom the forties to the seventies\, Russ produced dozens of dust jackets\, from striking first editions of Graham Greene at Bodley Head to a wide range of titles at Collins\, including nature books and the famous Collins Crime Club. \nHe is perhaps best known for his work with Penguin\, designing covers for the main orange series\, the lesser-known music scores\, and the highly collectible Penguin Poets series. His phoenix motif for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover became famous during the 1960 obscenity trial and featured in the marketing that helped make the book a bestseller. \nThe exhibition also celebrates Russ’s thirty-year career as a tutor at the renowned Bath Academy of Art in Corsham\, brought together with the generous support of the Russ family and loans from the Penguin Archive and the University of Bristol.

DESCRIPTION:A relaxed and not-scary block of 5 classes exploring movement and mark-making; what happens on the paper if the marks aren’t solely relying on the eyes to observe? How can our bodies explore dance in tandem with a mark-maker? And other curiosities! \nGeorgie has many years of dance experience in community and professional settings and has been moving and marking throughout. Kim is a highly skilled creative and has an embodied drawing practice. We will lead you in a gentle and collaborative way through some playful exercises. DESCRIPTION:In 1903\, the body of an unidentified woman was found in the river near Back Avon Bridge.\nThe man with her was charged with her murder.\nWhat happened next\, and did justice prevail? \nTogether\, we’ll explore a true crime from Chippenham’s past\, assessing all the evidence collected at the time\, and bringing our modern perspective and knowledge to the case to assess if the right judgement was made. \nThis friendly and interactive club session will explore the case from all angles and all perspectives\, including hindsight information not available to the legal team at the time. We’ll work together to see if we can bring new light to this old and very sad case.

SUMMARY:Chippenham Film Club May 2026 Screening: 'Exhibition on Screen: Dawn of Impressionism - Paris 1874' (rating PG)
DESCRIPTION:Chippenham Film Club was founded in 2022 to bring films to the town that would not normally be seen on the big screen in Chippenham. The club is run by a small group of volunteers\, with stewarding provided by the Reel Cinema theatre. The films on the programme are all selected by the members\, and all are films which have not been shown locally or received wide exposure nationally. \nYou do not need to be a film club member to attend a screening but subscribing to the club gives a 35% discount on the entry fee. \nThe Impressionists are the most popular group in art history – millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But\, to begin with\, they were scorned\, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists\, “hungry for independence”\, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever. \nAli Ray’s documentary begins with footage from a 2024 exhibition jointly held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC which restages the original Paris show of 1874. The story is told not by historians and curators but in the words of those who witnessed the dawn of Impressionism: the artists\, press and people of Paris\, 1874.
