SUMMARY:Wiltshire and the World: John Aubrey and the Quest for Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:John Aubrey was born in the small hamlet of Easton Piercy\, near Kington St Michael. Four hundred years later\, this exhibition celebrates the life and work of this extraordinary individual. \nWhen Aubrey was born in 1626\, it seemed that life would never change. But when he was just sixteen\, the English Civil War broke out\, and things changed rapidly. As old certainties unravelled\, space was created for an explosion of new ideas. Not all of this change was positive\, however. Advances in some areas were met with destruction in others. \nThroughout his life\, Aubrey was on a quest for knowledge. He wanted to learn everything he could. He grew up in Wiltshire\, but his vision was global. What he observed in the local countryside\, its people and places\, he expanded into a wider\, interconnected view of the world. From the ancient monuments of prehistoric peoples to contemporary ballads sung in the streets\, nothing escaped his notice. Seeing and doing things for himself\, rather than relying on what had been done before\, was central to his understanding. \nWhen Aubrey could not gain first-hand experience\, he sought out those who could. He consulted and collaborated with a wide range of people. He was not concerned with their background; instead\, he proudly credited and celebrated the knowledge and experiences they held. \nAubrey’s insatiable thirst for knowledge left an extraordinary legacy. When he saw historically important places and objects being destroyed\, he recorded them before it was too late. He gathered the unfiltered life stories of both the important and the not so important people of his time. He also looked to the future\, with plans to create an environment in which science and learning could flourish in the Wiltshire countryside. \nThis exhibition brings original manuscripts\, paintings and books back to Wiltshire and the area Aubrey knew for the first time since his death in 1697. Through them\, we can witness John Aubrey’s quest for knowledge and be inspired to begin our own. \nThe exhibition forms part of the Chippenham – Our History project.

DESCRIPTION:Walking Hockey is exactly as the name suggests – you play Hockey while walking – and is perfect for players who are looking for a less physically demanding version of the sport\, but still enjoy participating\, showing their skills and being involved in the team and social aspect of the sport. \nThe game is played on a smaller pitch with lighter balls and rules adapted for safety and accessibility. \nWe operate a weekly social mixed game at 6pm on Monday evenings all year round. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome. There’s always laughter and quite often the chance for a social drink afterwards if you feel like it!

DESCRIPTION:FOR AGES 18+ \nDrama Workshops with their basis in improvisation and devising\, but including script. \n‘The most fun I have all week’ \nMondays in 5 week blocks at the Cause Arts Centre\, Causeway Chippenham\nImprovers 7.30 – 9pm (Beginners 6 -7.30pm) \nFor those who’ve been coming to us for a while\, or who like to move a bit faster\, this session is for you. \nCome and join a lovely bunch of local budding thespians\, who like to mess about\, play games\, take part in drama exercises and generally have fun while learning how to think on the spot\, make up scenes and not always be restricted by the script. \nYou’ll explore scenes\, develop strong characters then improvise the content with some idea of the outcomes – Mike Leigh style. \nWe’ll also be developing some scenes and creating longer pieces\, so be prepared. SUMMARY:Album Listening Events Present Midnight Neon Live - FREE music fundraiser on June 22nd at The Old Road Tavern
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Album Listening Event fundraiser for Dorothy House Hospice sees a change of date and venue to avoid clashes with World Cup football match screenings – so we will be in the barn at The Old Road Tavern on Monday 22nd June starting promptly at 8pm. \nWe are really excited to announce that the new musical project called Midnight Neon\, which is a collaboration between drummer Rob Brian and vocalist Karolina Griškutė\, will perform their first ever live show at The Old Road Tavern as part of our June 2026 Album Listening Event – its a real privilege that they have chosen to make this their first gig. So you get a flavour of the the music they create together\, you can listen to the first single ‘Martini True’ which they have released on Spotify. \nRob chose the 1998 classic album ‘Mezzanine’ by Bristol band Massive Attack for us to listen to which he and Karolina say is an influence on their project. So alongside the Midnight Neon live material\, we will play that record in full from a brand new double LP vinyl version kindly loaned to us by Resolution Records in Bath. \nAll are welcome to drop by and listen for as long as you wish\, entry is free but voluntary donations by cash or card for Dorothy House Hospice will be gratefully received.
