SUMMARY:Wiltshire and the World: John Aubrey and the Quest for Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:John Aubrey was born in the small hamlet of Easton Piercy\, near Kington St Michael. Four hundred years later\, this exhibition celebrates the life and work of this extraordinary individual. \nWhen Aubrey was born in 1626\, it seemed that life would never change. But when he was just sixteen\, the English Civil War broke out\, and things changed rapidly. As old certainties unravelled\, space was created for an explosion of new ideas. Not all of this change was positive\, however. Advances in some areas were met with destruction in others. \nThroughout his life\, Aubrey was on a quest for knowledge. He wanted to learn everything he could. He grew up in Wiltshire\, but his vision was global. What he observed in the local countryside\, its people and places\, he expanded into a wider\, interconnected view of the world. From the ancient monuments of prehistoric peoples to contemporary ballads sung in the streets\, nothing escaped his notice. Seeing and doing things for himself\, rather than relying on what had been done before\, was central to his understanding. \nWhen Aubrey could not gain first-hand experience\, he sought out those who could. He consulted and collaborated with a wide range of people. He was not concerned with their background; instead\, he proudly credited and celebrated the knowledge and experiences they held. \nAubrey’s insatiable thirst for knowledge left an extraordinary legacy. When he saw historically important places and objects being destroyed\, he recorded them before it was too late. He gathered the unfiltered life stories of both the important and the not so important people of his time. He also looked to the future\, with plans to create an environment in which science and learning could flourish in the Wiltshire countryside. \nThis exhibition brings original manuscripts\, paintings and books back to Wiltshire and the area Aubrey knew for the first time since his death in 1697. Through them\, we can witness John Aubrey’s quest for knowledge and be inspired to begin our own. \nThe exhibition forms part of the Chippenham – Our History project.

SUMMARY:Collab Crafters : Minecraft Education Club
DESCRIPTION:A weekly Saturday morning club in Chippenham for children aged 7 to 11 who love Minecraft\, run by a qualified primary school teacher. \nCollab Crafters uses Minecraft Education\, the version built for the classroom\, to teach children how to design and build properly. The club runs across the year in six-week terms\, and each term has its own focus. Children start with the foundations of building well\, then move into making things work with redstone\, designing whole places\, and eventually coding. \nEverything happens in a shared world\, so the children have to talk to each other\, agree on plans and think about how their work fits alongside everyone else’s. Collaboration is the point\, not an afterthought. \nSessions run every Saturday from 10:00am to 11:30am at Monkton Park Golf Course. Groups are kept small so every child gets proper support\, and laptops and software licences are provided. No previous Minecraft experience is needed\, and children who have played at home and children who have never opened it both get on well. \n£99 for a six-week term\, which can be paid in full or in two instalments. Sessions are led by an enhanced DBS-checked teacher and the club is fully insured.

DESCRIPTION:Capture the spirit of a place in a small\, expressive watercolour painting. \nIn this relaxed and creative workshop\, you’ll turn travel memories\, favourite locations\, or imagined destinations into postcard-sized artworks full of colour and atmosphere. You’ll learn approachable watercolour techniques for painting landscapes\, buildings\, and everyday scenes\, with guidance on composition\, colour\, and how to suggest detail simply and confidently. \nYou’ll be encouraged to interpret your scene in your own way—whether that’s loose and sketchy\, expressive and atmospheric\, or a little more detailed. \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. Whether you’re inspired by holidays\, city breaks\, or places closer to home\, you’ll leave with your painted postcard\, an Introduction to Watercolour booklet\, and the skills to continue capturing places you love in watercolour. \nMost participants will complete at least one finished postcard during the workshop\, ready to frame\, send\, gift\, or keep as a personal souvenir. \nWe’ll have exclusive use of The Waverley’s spacious main upstairs room\, and a complimentary drink of your choice is included in your ticket. \nAll materials are provided (or feel free to bring your own).
