DESCRIPTION:Wiltshire Rural Music are proud to present our 2022 Liz Laurence Award Winner GABRIEL LONGBOTHAM on Saturday 29th July at The Cause\, Chippenham. \n“An evening of beautiful\, soulful music showcasing Devizes’ finest young talent – the incredible Gabriel Longbotham” \nGabriel is a 19 year old pianist\, organist and songwriter from Devizes. He attended St Augustine’s School in Trowbridge and is currently studying music at Royal Northern College in Manchester. He won our Liz Lawrence Award last April after wowing the judges with his talent on piano. \nAs a Wiltshire based charity\, WRM aims to provide young people with access to music without the barrier of cost. Gabriel received bursaries from WRM to assist him in his musical studies\, and\, as a result of support from this scheme\, he achieved his Grade 8. \nThe Liz Laurence Award consists of a £1\,000 prize which was presented by the Mayor of Devizes\, but also the chance to perform a one off hometown gig with the charity’s help. SUMMARY:Peter Potworowski: West Country Exile
DESCRIPTION:Born in Poland in 1898\, Peter Potworowski was part of the Parisian Artistic community of the 1920s that included the likes of Picasso\, Bonnard\, and Léger. After the Nazi-occupation of his home-land Potworowski settled in England in 1943\, beginning a long association with the West Country. \nThe majority of works in this selling exhibition are from his time living in Cornwall\, Devon\, Somerset and Wiltshire. In 1949 he joined the teaching staff at the Bath Academy of Art\, Corsham\, where his own work as an artist matured in contact with the English landscape. \nChippenham Museum\, a Chippenham Town Council facility\, is free entry\, open Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm\, including bank holidays.

DESCRIPTION:An early play\, ‘Two Gentlemen of Verona’ has feisty heroines\, lovelorn & bickering young men\, dictatorial parents\, foolish suitors\, cross-dressing\, letters galore\, wild outlaws\, witty servants\, a big fight\, and a lugubrious clown with a dog.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShakespeare Live\, best known for over 30 years of outdoor productions in Wiltshire\, have been touring their popular annual autumn show for several years\, focusing on plays less often performed or on original Shakespeare-based pieces. This year\, as often before the pandemic\, we are proud that the production was picked by the RSC for performance at their open-air Dell space in Stratford upon Avon in August. DESCRIPTION:The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case\, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS. \nHaving retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016\, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague\, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton\, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. \n‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020\, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound. \nAlthough born and bred in England\, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80’s/early 90’s. \nHowever\, you can only sing about what you know. \n“Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.” \nTheir debut album produced by cult producer Teo Miller\, captures truthful\, open-hearted\, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs\, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway and The Beautiful South story. \n‘Cool To Be Kind’ is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds.
