This year\, as often before the pandemic\, we are proud that the production was picked by the RSC for performance at their open-air Dell space in Stratford upon Avon in August. DESCRIPTION:The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case\, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS. \nHaving retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016\, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague\, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton\, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. \n‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020\, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound. \nAlthough born and bred in England\, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80’s/early 90’s. \nHowever\, you can only sing about what you know. \n“Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.” \nTheir debut album produced by cult producer Teo Miller\, captures truthful\, open-hearted\, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs\, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway and The Beautiful South story. \n‘Cool To Be Kind’ is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds. SUMMARY:Making Spaces: Creative Project
DESCRIPTION:Chippenham Museum is launching a new project to work with Ukrainian families\, alongside a local artist\, to produce a new artwork exploring Chippenham and the surrounding area as a place of refuge. \nThe project is inspired by the work of Belgian artist Charles Wellens and Polish artist Piotr Potworowski\, who each fled conflicts in the 20th century and made their home in the area. DESCRIPTION:Ellie Thompson is an artist currently practicing in the South-West. Since graduating from The Ruskin School of Art in 2022\, Ellie has exhibited a host of hapless characters across Oxford\, London\, Bath\, Bristol\, Rugby and Corsham. \nThompson’s interest in schadenfreude (the joy derived from another’s misfortune)\, anatomy and a cartoonish sense of humour informs each of her soft sculptures. Her puppet-like characters are at once extinct and alive\, forever stuck in a sticky situation. \nHarm Joy features a cast of perpetually wretched skeletons\, all made out of felt fabric and created by Thompson over the last year. Though each character is motionless\, they are animated by their all-seeing yet unknowing eyes.

Love Stories\, by Mark Rutterford\, promises a Valentine’s Day event like no other and one you’ll never forget. As the audience eats Love Heart sweets\, they will hear tales of love affairs and heartache but like any romantic encounter\, Love Stories is not a passive experience. \nAudience engagement is a big part of the show. It’s the audience that decides who wins the World Cup of Love Songs\, what happens in one story and\, having heard Mark’s best and worst romantic moments\, they’ll be invited to share their own triumphs and disasters. Laughs and empathy are guaranteed. \nThis interactive theatre piece is that latest offering from Kandu Arts\, a Chippenham based company that has been using the arts and activities to explore a wide range of issues and nurture strong relationships within the community for 25 years. \nAn alien reports that he just ‘doesn’t get it\,’ but the 4-Star Review from last year’s Bath Fringe Festival says that you will feel the connection and that you might be beguiled into leaving your cynic at the door. \n“the connection…is what makes the night – during our short time together we become friends hanging out” \nBackground \nMark Rutterford is a writer-performer that has been performing stories across the South West for a decade. Love Stories is Mark’s first solo show – it made its debut at Bath Fringe Festival in May 2023 (4-Stars) and went on to Shaftesbury Fringe in July and Camden Fringe in August last year. The mix of performance\, props\, emotions and audience engagement are key features in the inclusive\, funny and entertaining show Mark wanted to create. He is delighted to be working with Kandu Arts and to be performing in Chippenham for the first time – he hopes to do more of both in future. \nKandu Arts for sustainable development is based in Chippenham\, Wiltshire\, and has worked since 1998 with communities\, often the most marginalized and hardest to reach up and down the country. They use music\, film\, visual arts & sport as a means to explore a wide range of issues. Combined with nurturing strong relationships\, this approach is highly effective in areas of engaging the disaffected\, increasing community cohesion and development.

DESCRIPTION:Calling all artists\, illustrators and doodlers of Chippenham! A NEW drop in event for all you budding artists. \nWe’re launching a social evening packed full of creativity. Come along and get involved with a few drawing games\, communal doodle piece\, work on your sketchbook and collaborate with other artists. All art supplies provided\, but feel free to bring your own. \nA friendly safe space to meet other creatives and dedicate a couple of hours to having fun and getting some drawings done. No pressure\, No judgement\, all levels and abilities welcome. Come and be inspired\, informally. Bring your favourite drink\, meet other local artists and start a new creative community with us. \nThis is the launch night but we hope to run this once a month if there’s enough interest.
