SUMMARY:The Power of the Particular: Brief Lives Creative Writing Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chippenham Museum Creative Writing Group for a series of linked workshops celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of local antiquarian and famous biographer\, John Aubrey. The workshops will be led by Lesley Taylor\, an experienced facilitator\, and will draw inspiration from Aubrey’s work and the museum’s summer exhibition. \nBorn in Kington St Michael in 1626\, Aubrey was a biographer\, archaeologist\, scientist\, naturalist\, and oral historian. He valued the minutiae of everyday life\, and his writing is rich with specific (and often witty) details that bring the past to life. \nDrawing on his most well-known work\, Brief Lives – written portraits of key figures of his day – the workshops will explore how to write with greater detail. Sessions will provide an opportunity to develop the skill of telling your own stories with clarity\, experimenting with a range of forms including flash fiction\, memoir\, poetry\, and creative non-fiction. \nSuitable for beginners and experienced writers alike\, this series of monthly workshops will culminate in An Evening with Aubrey at the museum\, where participants’ work will be shared and celebrated. The date for this celebratory event is to be confirmed. \nEach session costs £5 per person. Spaces are limited\, so booking is essential. Please contact the museum to reserve your place. \n \nFind out more about the Chippenham – Our History project on this website here.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshops: 16-18 Year Olds
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of local antiquarian and famous biographer\, John Aubrey. Open to young people aged 16-18\, these free workshops offer the chance to develop your writing skills and see your work in print. \nAubrey was an archaeologist\, scientist\, and historian who\, from a young age\, collected stories and local legends from people across Wiltshire. He used these to create a series of mini-biographies collectively known as Brief Lives. \nInspired by Aubrey’s work\, participants will use the museum’s collection of portraits\, taken by local photographers in the 1900s\, as creative prompts to write their own ‘brief life’ for these anonymous figures. \nAn experienced writer will lead the workshops\, helping young people develop their skills and explore new writing forms and genres\, including: \nPoetry and lyric writing\nDramatic monologues and short scripts\nShort stories and flash fiction\nThe project is supported by the Friends of Chippenham Museum and will conclude with a special celebration of the work produced\, including a printed publication. \nThese workshops are free\, but spaces are limited\, so booking is essential. Please contact the museum to reserve your place. \n  \nFind out more about the Chippenham – Our History project on this website here.

SUMMARY:An Avon Ginko
DESCRIPTION:A walking\, watching\, writing\, short poetry experience! \nA “ginko” is a traditional activity in Japan\, and is the term for going on a walk\, in a group\, specifically to write poetry. \nCome and write short poems with us\, on a walk along the Chippenham Avon and its environs. There’ll be plenty of time to stop\, stare\, and take notes along a maximum of 2.5 miles distance. We’ll then sit down outside (under outside cover according to weather) to finish three-line Japanese-style “haiku”\, or other short poems. A hot or cold drink will be included in the ticket price. At all points there will be plenty of one-to-one guidance\, from published poets and experienced tutors Alan Summers and Karen Hoy of Call of the Page. \nSeasons are important in Japanese poetry. We will be leading a summer\, autumn\, winter\, and spring walking writing workshop. You can book for the first one\, a summer ginko\, below. Anticipate dragonflies\, swans\, lily pads\, and willow trees. \nDate: Saturday August 13th 2022\nTime: 10 am to 1 pm \nWe start and end at Chippenham Town Bridge (less than 5 minutes walk from Chippenham station\, and car parks). The bridge postcode is SN15 1EX. \nMaximum group size: 10\nTickets: £38 full price\, including a hot or cold drink. An early bird rate of £34 applies until Sunday 7th August 2022. \nBursaries: We have a free bursary place and a half-price place on each ginko. Please contact us for details of qualifying for these. As well as affordability and income level we take into consideration social benefit\, for instance if you are bereaved\, or are requiring “social prescribing”. \nFind out more –\nhttps://www.callofthepage.org/events/avon-ginko-workshops/
