DESCRIPTION:Make 2025 your year of discovery and join our new Treasures from the Archives group. This is an opportunity for you to explore some of the amazing documents in the Wiltshire and Swindon Archive collections in a friendly and informal setting. \nThe group meets every other month on a Saturday\, led by Community History Advisor Gianna Torchia. Each hour-long session will focus on an original document that will be explored and discussed to reveal the creative side of archives through the stories of people\, places or events. Gianna hopes to inspire members to get creative using information from the original documents. An information pack\, including transcriptions and reading lists\, will be available at the end of each session. \nEach session has a different theme which will provide you with an opportunity to explore not only the original documents\, but also to look at recreations made by Gianna especially for the session\, such as knitting from historic patterns and tasting products made using original recipes. \nTreasures from the Archives is the ideal introduction to exploring Wiltshire’s history and expanding your understanding and knowledge of the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre’s collections. \nThe sessions are free and will run every other month on a Saturday from 11:00 to 12:00. \nFor more information contact archives@wiltshire.gov.uk or tel 01249 705500

DESCRIPTION:I’m happy to announce the next two static sessions of History Portal Club\, planned for September. \nHistory Portal Club is friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company.\nIt’s a great way to explore the local area’s past together – no lectures\, no stuffy rooms\, just walking\, talking\, pub chats\, and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks. \nOn Tuesday 16 September we’ll be delving into all things Awdry – Just Who Were The Awdrys Anyway? – looking at various members of the prominent 19th & 20th century family whose name peppers the town. \nTogether we’ll explore the characters in one of Chippenham’s best known families.\nWho were they?\nWhat did they do?\nWhy are they so important to the town? \nThis fun club session will discuss and explore a few key members of the Awdry family from the 19th and early 20th centuries\, and how they relate to Chippenham past and present. \nThere’s more information on both the sessions here – www.lucywhitfieldhistorian.co.uk/history-club – and on how History Portal Club works. \nWe’re a friendly and very welcoming group.
