SUMMARY:Treasures from the Archives – Explore\, Discover\, Discuss
DESCRIPTION:Make 2025 your year of discovery and join our new Treasures from the Archives group. This is an opportunity for you to explore some of the amazing documents in the Wiltshire and Swindon Archive collections in a friendly and informal setting. \nThe group meets every other month on a Saturday\, led by Community History Advisor Gianna Torchia. Each hour-long session will focus on an original document that will be explored and discussed to reveal the creative side of archives through the stories of people\, places or events. Gianna hopes to inspire members to get creative using information from the original documents. An information pack\, including transcriptions and reading lists\, will be available at the end of each session. \nEach session has a different theme which will provide you with an opportunity to explore not only the original documents\, but also to look at recreations made by Gianna especially for the session\, such as knitting from historic patterns and tasting products made using original recipes. \nTreasures from the Archives is the ideal introduction to exploring Wiltshire’s history and expanding your understanding and knowledge of the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre’s collections. \nThe sessions are free and will run every other month on a Saturday from 11:00 to 12:00. \nFor more information contact archives@wiltshire.gov.uk or tel 01249 705500

SUMMARY:What was life like at the Sanitary Laundry?
DESCRIPTION:A meeting of History Portal Club\, with Lucy Whitfield\, Historian. \nWe’ll take a deep dive into the life of the Sanitary Laundry\, which was just by Ivy Lane School (the chimney’s still there\, albeit a bit shorter than it was). This workplace employed generations of townsfolk\, but piecing its history together is a job and a half\, so if you (or one of your folks) worked there at any time\, please pass on some memories. \nThis interactive club session will explore the life and times of a bygone workplace that played a significant part in the culture of the town\, with practices and technologies that are long gone but still fondly remembered. \nHistory Portal Club is a friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company. It’s a great way to explore the local area’s past together – no lectures\, no stuffy rooms\, just walking\, talking\, pub chats\, and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks.

SUMMARY:Walk - How much of Chippenham did John Provis build?
DESCRIPTION:A town walk meeting of History Portal Club\, with Lucy Whitfield\, Historian. \nThe guy that built the house that is now the Brunel Pub\, by the arches\, was John Provis. He\, and his identically named dad\, built a lot more of Chippenham than that – the Bear Hotel for example\, and loads more. And Lucy’s been digging further into the family – so there’s some surprises to come. \nThis walk and talk will take in factors which shaped the town in the late 18th and early 19th centuries\, through the eyes and work of this prominent family\, who also had a celebrated artist in their ranks. \nMeet Lucy Whitfield at Cousin Norman’s at 10am for a gentle walk through what Mr Provis got up to. \n(If inclement weather\, session will take place indoors).

SUMMARY:Chippenham's myths\, legends and rumours
DESCRIPTION:A meeting of History Portal Club\, with Lucy Whitfield\, Historian \nTogether we’ll look at commonly-held rumours about incidents in Chippenham’s past that pepper local history discussion\, and whether there’s any truth in them – so we’re talking aliens\, murders\, escaped wild animals\, arson plots\, palaces\, accidents and so on. \nThis interactive club session will explore the stories that run through the community\, from Victorian supposition to mis-remembered details\, weighing up the evidence and seeking the truth – if it’s out there. \nHistory Portal Club is a friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company.

SUMMARY:As-We-See-It-Saturday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for As-We-See-It-Saturday\, a celebration of all things photography at Chippenham Museum. \nThis special event marks 25 years since the original ‘As We See It’ project\, in which three young people created a photographic record of Chippenham through over 500 black-and-white film images. Now\, a new generation from the museum’s Photo Club is recreating the project\, this time using both film and digital photography to reflect how much the town\, and photography itself\, has changed. \nCome and view a selection of then-and-now images from the museum’s collection\, discover how today’s young photographers are progressing with their project\, and get involved in creating a collective photo artwork. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast\, local history fan\, or just curious\, As-We-See-It-Saturday is a chance to celebrate creativity\, community\, and the evolving everyday. \nBring your own photos to share and contribute to a growing visual archive of the town!

SUMMARY:Chippenham's secret tunnels - fact or fiction?
DESCRIPTION:The opening taster meeting for History Portal Club. \nTogether we’ll explore myths and truths about various tunnels believed to exist under the town.\nWhere are they?\nWho built them?\nWhere do they go?\nWhy do we love the idea of a secret tunnel? \nThis fun opening session will look at the subject from all angles\, and also help to establish the direction of the History Portal Club going forward. \nHistory Portal Club aims to be a different sort of history club. No lectures\, no stuffy rooms\, just walking\, talking\, pub chats and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks. It’s about finding value in ordinary lives and heritage\, and connecting with places. A meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company. Taking on topics we see around us every day. \nA club that isn’t afraid to ask “what is history anyway”? One that values and encourages ordinary experiences\, doesn’t subscribe to the way history was traditionally taught\, and values nostalgia and memory as well as books and facts. \nIt’s a meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company. \nThere’s no obligation to become a member\, just come along and give it a try. And\, after this\, there’ll be a programme of topics (walks and static) as we go into the autumn.
