SUMMARY:AI and the Archive... Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre's latest research project needs your help
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking History with AI: How Can Technology Transform Your Experience with Archives? \nAre you fascinated by history and curious about how artificial intelligence (AI) can change the way we discover and engage with the past? Join an exciting research project exploring how AI-driven content transformation can enhance access and interaction with historical archives! \nFalmouth University student\, Ian McGinn\, as part of his masters degree research in User Experience Design\, is investigating how AI can help make historical archives more discoverable and engaging. With AI\, we can transform traditional content into interactive and new formats\, such as audio descriptions\, podcasts\, summaries\, and digital enhancements. \nWhether you are a frequent user of archives or someone who wants to explore historical content in new\, innovative ways\, your participation will contribute to research in this exciting field\, helping to uncover the way we interact with and understand our shared heritage. \nParticipation involves exploring AI-transformed archival materials and sharing your feedback through a combination of observations and short interviews. \nIf you’re interested in being part of this innovative study\, please reach out directly to Ian at im318630@falmouth.ac.uk or through us at archives@wiltshire.gov.uk \nAlternatively\, you can call the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre on\n01249 705500 to express your interest.\nThe study will take place on Wednesday 13th\, Friday 15th\, and Friday 22nd November at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.

SUMMARY:Women's History: Maud Heath & Beyond\, Exploring the Lives of Women Before 1600
DESCRIPTION:Maud Heath is one of Wiltshire’s most well-known mediaeval women\, with a causeway named after her and monuments raised in her honour. Yet she is one of many women of Wiltshire before 1600 whose lives are notable and worthy of celebration\, but whose stories are not studied or recounted. \nThis study day explores women’s history before 1600—women’s diverse impacts on the society\, economy\, religion and politics of the world around them. The event will feature papers and discussions and will draw\, in part\, on academics involved in the Victoria County History project\, presenting their insights from research in place-based histories from Wiltshire and beyond. \nThe event is specifically designed to promote the long-overlooked discipline of women’s history and will appeal to local history enthusiasts\, historians\, genealogists and anyone interested in women’s lives in Wiltshire past. \nThe keynote speaker is Professor Catherine Clarke\, Director of the History of People\, Place and Community at the Institute of Historical Research who will question the role of Artificial Intelligence in women’s history research with a fascinating look at whether AI can reflect back our own assumptions\, prejudices\, and gaps in our historical knowledge\, and if there ways we can use generative AI productively\, to re-visit gaps and uncertainties\, to re-tell women’s stories\, and start new conversations? \nThis study day forms part of the Maud Heath National Lottery Funded project which provides free entry to this event but places can be booked via Eventbrite. \nMaud Heath and Beyond: Exploring the Lives of Women Before 1600 at The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre event tickets from TicketSource. \nFree parking is available in front of the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre\, which is a 5–10 minute walk from Chippenham Railway Station. \nFor further information contact Emily Malcolm\, email emily@yesterdaysstory.co.uk

SUMMARY:Open Day at Pewsham Locks
DESCRIPTION:The restoration of a former waterway on the edge of Chippenham will be celebrated at a special event this weekend. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is sharing the fascinating history of Pewsham Locks this Saturday 14th September. \nThe event includes a pop-up café and tours of the worksite and wildlife habitats\, together with boat rides along the stretch which has already been rebuilt. The charity hopes it will encourage people to learn more about the restoration campaign and how they can get involved. \n\nThe pop-up café at the wharf includes outside seating and will be serving teas\, coffees and cakes from 10am\, when volunteers will also start taking small groups around the site to explain their current work and future plans.\nTours of the wildflower meadow and habitat management project will take place at Double Bridge at 11am and 2.30pm\, while boat rides will depart from the locks approximately every 45 minutes from 12.30pm.\nRefreshments and boat rides are available by cash donation or by scanning a QR code.\nThe open day is due to finish at around 3pm.\n\nThe event is being organised by the Melksham\, Chippenham & Calne branch of the Trust. Spokesperson Brian Wright said: \n“We hope people will make the most of this opportunity to take a closer look at the flight of locks which once lifted narrowboats on their journey between Melksham and Chippenham \nVisitors will see the remains of the lock-keepers cottage and how we’re rebuilding the former dry dock and carpenter’s workshop\, and creating new wildlife habitats alongside the canal. Depending on the water levels\, they can also enjoy cruises to Double Bridge and back\, with the chance to see kingfishers\, herons\, swans and even otters! \nIt’s a great way to encourage people to support our campaign to bring this wonderful waterway back to life.” \nThere is no visitor parking at the locks\, but the site is just a short walk along a footpath from the edge of Pewsham. Directions are available at www.wbct.org.uk/mcc-events \nAnother open day is due to be held on Saturday 12th October.\nFor further information call 07510 326730 or email bright.wright@wbct.org.uk \nThe aim of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is to restore the waterway from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon\, connecting Chippenham\, Calne\, Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon. \nVisit www.wbct.org.uk

SUMMARY:RETURN TO THE HIDING PLACE - A Searchlight Theatre Performance
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome to join us for the theatrical performance of “Return to the hiding place”\, the story of Corrie Ten Boom. Doors open at 6:45 and only £7 per ticket! \nA reimagining of Corrie Ten Boom’s biographical tale of forgiveness and reconciliation in the shadows of WW2. The family bravely hide Jews in their small clock shop. The consequences are dark and devastating. \nThe production looks not only at the story from Corrie’s viewpoint but also from a German army officer’s angle as well. How do they both regard their families\, their faith\, the Jewish people and the occupation of Holland? \nThey begin in different worlds\, but eventually come face to face with each other. Moving and inspiring\, and relevant for today. \nSuitable for anyone age 12+
