SUMMARY:Heritage Cafe: F.W. Jones - The Funerals of Chippenham's History
DESCRIPTION:This month a representative from F.W. Jones will give a talk on The Funerals of Chippenham’s History. Frederick William Jones began the business as both a funeral director and cabinetmaker in 1930. Since then\, the business has progressed through two successive Jones generations\, serving the community of Chippenham throughout those years. The F.W. Jones team of today will present how the business evolved from 1930 to now\, highlighting some very important and unique funerals along the way. We hope you can join us in the museum’s Education Room. \nNon-members who attend are invited to donate £2 to Friends of Chippenham Museum; annual membership is £5 per person\, renewed each July. If you are interested in joining\, please visit the website to download a membership form or pop into the museum on your next visit. \nFriends of Chippenham Museum supports the museum by fundraising\, promoting activities and organising an enjoyable social programme for members. Being a Friend gives you the opportunity to receive newsletters with special interest articles and news from the Museum\, attend monthly coffee afternoons called Heritage Café for socialising and special interest talks\, and take part in special activities such as local trips\, parties\, events\, etc. \nThe Friends of the Museum group was launched in June 2012 with the help of a small\, dedicated band of volunteers\, celebrating with a special event in the town’s Yelde Hall\, the home of the original museum. \nOur main aim at the time was to build a bridge between the museum and the public\, increasing local engagement and making the institution more approachable. \nToday\, that relationship has worked exceptionally well. Our Friends act as vital ambassadors\, providing specialized local knowledge and expertise. This small\, enthusiastic group of supporters has grown to nearly 100 members.

SUMMARY:History Portal Club: Women on the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Together\, we’ll explore the town’s women who weren’t exactly respectable in the eyes of society – witches\, criminals\, herbalists\, prostitutes\, and those who didn’t conform to what a well-behaved person should have done. \nWho were some of Chippenham’s disreputable characters?\nWhere was the first executed witch in England based?\nWhat did the herbalist do to kill her patient? \nThis friendly and interactive club session will explore the history of the town’s women through the stories of those who didn’t conform\, or were caught up in events beyond their control to be branded “bad” by society at large\, and how they fit into a larger national picture.

DESCRIPTION:Make 2025 your year of discovery and join our new Treasures from the Archives group. This is an opportunity for you to explore some of the amazing documents in the Wiltshire and Swindon Archive collections in a friendly and informal setting. \nThe group meets every other month on a Saturday\, led by Community History Advisor Gianna Torchia. Gianna hopes to inspire members to get creative using information from the original documents. An information pack\, including transcriptions and reading lists\, will be available at the end of each session. \nEach session has a different theme which will provide you with an opportunity to explore not only the original documents\, but also to look at recreations made by Gianna especially for the session\, such as knitting from historic patterns and tasting products made using original recipes. \nTreasures from the Archives is the ideal introduction to exploring Wiltshire’s history and expanding your understanding and knowledge of the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre’s collections. \nThe sessions are free and will run every other month on a Saturday from 11:00 to 12:00. \nFor more information contact archives@wiltshire.gov.uk or tel 01249 705500

SUMMARY:Walk - How much of Chippenham did John Provis build?
DESCRIPTION:A town walk meeting of History Portal Club\, with Lucy Whitfield\, Historian. \nThe guy that built the house that is now the Brunel Pub\, by the arches\, was John Provis. He\, and his identically named dad\, built a lot more of Chippenham than that – the Bear Hotel for example\, and loads more. And Lucy’s been digging further into the family – so there’s some surprises to come. \nThis walk and talk will take in factors which shaped the town in the late 18th and early 19th centuries\, through the eyes and work of this prominent family\, who also had a celebrated artist in their ranks. \nMeet Lucy Whitfield at Cousin Norman’s at 10am for a gentle walk through what Mr Provis got up to. \nHistory Portal Club is a friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company. It’s a great way to explore the local area’s past together – no lectures\, no stuffy rooms\, just walking\, talking\, pub chats\, and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks. \n(If inclement weather\, session will take place indoors).

SUMMARY:Why Did Chippenham Have Two Riots?
DESCRIPTION:I’m happy to announce the next two static sessions of History Portal Club\, planned for September. \nHistory Portal Club is friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company. It’s a great way to explore the local area’s past together – no lectures\, no stuffy rooms\, just walking\, talking\, pub chats\, and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks. \nOn Tuesday 30 September we’ll explore the two periods of unrest Chippenham experienced – Why Did Chippenham Have Two Riots? – looking at causes\, effects\, and how we frame these both today and in the 19th century when they occurred. \nTogether we’ll explore and dissect the two incidents of unrest in the 19th century.\nWhat happened?\nWho was involved?\nWhere did they take place? \nThis club session will explore the action from all angles\, looking at cause and effect and tragic outcome\, and put the two riots into context\, from the perspective of the times they occurred and our modern viewpoints. \nThere’s more information on both the sessions here – www.lucywhitfieldhistorian.co.uk/history-club – and on how History Portal Club works. \nWe’re a friendly and very welcoming group. If you’re interested in what we’re going to discuss\, and want to see what it’s all about\, you can join us for £10 for that session. That’s also the cost of attending as a member. We’d love it if you came to join us.
