SUMMARY:The Power of the Particular: Brief Lives Creative Writing Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chippenham Museum Creative Writing Group for a series of linked workshops celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of local antiquarian and famous biographer\, John Aubrey. The workshops will be led by Lesley Taylor\, an experienced facilitator\, and will draw inspiration from Aubrey’s work and the museum’s summer exhibition. \nBorn in Kington St Michael in 1626\, Aubrey was a biographer\, archaeologist\, scientist\, naturalist\, and oral historian. He valued the minutiae of everyday life\, and his writing is rich with specific (and often witty) details that bring the past to life. \nDrawing on his most well-known work\, Brief Lives – written portraits of key figures of his day – the workshops will explore how to write with greater detail. Sessions will provide an opportunity to develop the skill of telling your own stories with clarity\, experimenting with a range of forms including flash fiction\, memoir\, poetry\, and creative non-fiction. \nSuitable for beginners and experienced writers alike\, this series of monthly workshops will culminate in An Evening with Aubrey at the museum\, where participants’ work will be shared and celebrated. The date for this celebratory event is to be confirmed. \nEach session costs £5 per person. Spaces are limited\, so booking is essential. SUMMARY:Postcards in Watercolour: Painting Places & Travel Scenes
DESCRIPTION:Capture the spirit of a place in a small\, expressive watercolour painting. \nIn this relaxed and creative workshop\, you’ll turn travel memories\, favourite locations\, or imagined destinations into postcard-sized artworks full of colour and atmosphere. You’ll learn approachable watercolour techniques for painting landscapes\, buildings\, and everyday scenes\, with guidance on composition\, colour\, and how to suggest detail simply and confidently. \nYou’ll be encouraged to interpret your scene in your own way—whether that’s loose and sketchy\, expressive and atmospheric\, or a little more detailed. \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. Whether you’re inspired by holidays\, city breaks\, or places closer to home\, you’ll leave with your painted postcard\, an Introduction to Watercolour booklet\, and the skills to continue capturing places you love in watercolour. \nMost participants will complete at least one finished postcard during the workshop\, ready to frame\, send\, gift\, or keep as a personal souvenir. \nWe’ll have exclusive use of The Waverley’s spacious main upstairs room\, and a complimentary drink of your choice is included in your ticket. \nAll materials are provided (or feel free to bring your own). No prior drawing experience is required – just curiosity\, a love for travel\, and a willingness to experiment.
