SUMMARY:Open Day at Pewsham Locks
DESCRIPTION:The restoration of a former waterway on the edge of Chippenham will be celebrated at a special event this weekend. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is sharing the fascinating history of Pewsham Locks this Saturday 14th September. \nThe event includes a pop-up café and tours of the worksite and wildlife habitats\, together with boat rides along the stretch which has already been rebuilt. The charity hopes it will encourage people to learn more about the restoration campaign and how they can get involved. \n\nThe pop-up café at the wharf includes outside seating and will be serving teas\, coffees and cakes from 10am\, when volunteers will also start taking small groups around the site to explain their current work and future plans.\nTours of the wildflower meadow and habitat management project will take place at Double Bridge at 11am and 2.30pm\, while boat rides will depart from the locks approximately every 45 minutes from 12.30pm.\nRefreshments and boat rides are available by cash donation or by scanning a QR code.\nThe open day is due to finish at around 3pm.\n\nThe event is being organised by the Melksham\, Chippenham & Calne branch of the Trust. Spokesperson Brian Wright said: \n“We hope people will make the most of this opportunity to take a closer look at the flight of locks which once lifted narrowboats on their journey between Melksham and Chippenham \nVisitors will see the remains of the lock-keepers cottage and how we’re rebuilding the former dry dock and carpenter’s workshop\, and creating new wildlife habitats alongside the canal. Depending on the water levels\, they can also enjoy cruises to Double Bridge and back\, with the chance to see kingfishers\, herons\, swans and even otters! \nIt’s a great way to encourage people to support our campaign to bring this wonderful waterway back to life.” \nThere is no visitor parking at the locks\, but the site is just a short walk along a footpath from the edge of Pewsham. Learn about our fascinating history and find out more about Joseph Neeld\, our namesake and benefactor. \nDelve into the secret corners of the Neeld and Town Hall to discover behind-the-scenes areas such as the tech booth\, backstage and Mayor’s Parlour. \nOur free guided tour will tell you more about the fascinating history of our buildings. \nThe Neeld has played several different roles in the heart of the Chippenham community\, including a Cheese Market and a WW1 Hospital. Following a refurbishment project in 2015\, The Neeld is a thriving Community and Arts Centre with an exciting programme of professional shows and local groups’ activities. The Town Hall was opened in 1834 and remains the civic heart of the town and home of Chippenham Town Council. \nTours will take place at 10am and midday (duration approx. 45 minutes). Each tour will have a maximum of 20 people so pre-booking is encouraged to avoid disappointment. \nChildren’s colouring activity available. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nCertain areas of this tour are only accessible by stairs. \nOur customer service desk will be open throughout the day but the tour must be pre-booked. \nThere is parking nearby at Bath Road car park (long stay) or Borough Parade car park (short stay). DESCRIPTION:The Chippenham Harriers Half Marathon is run over a fast\, accurately measured and predominantly flat course starting and finishing at our club’s home base The Chippenham Sports Club on Bristol Road. \nThe route goes through the centre of Chippenham\, up the High Street and then follows scenic country lanes and pretty local villages and hamlets including; Tytherton Lucas\, East Tytherton\, Avon and Langley Burrell. \nThis event is ideal for first timers and experienced long distance runners looking to achieve a personal best. \nThe course is measured and certified as accurate by an accredited course measurer. The Chippenham Harriers Half Marathon is licensed by Run Britain and is included in their race rankings. \nALL PROFITS FROM THIS RACE ARE DONATED TO LOCAL CHARITIES AND GOOD CAUSES. In 2023 that was over £12\,000! Additionally the race is organised with “Eco-Credentials” meaning we always try to embrace new materials (like compostable cups and reusable barrier tape) and processes (like car sharing and hiring electric vehicles).

You’ll use a diverse range of styles and techniques that stretch you and keep you motivated to improve. \nAll while enjoying fresh coffee and meeting some other lovely local artists. You can work at your own pace and be left alone to draw if this is how you prefer to learn. \nTuesdays 7pm-9pm (Also on Wednesdays 9:30am-11:30am) \nLife Drawing is challenging and rewarding\, but like drawing anything else\, it takes practice and patience. \nThe best way to encourage practice is to vary the media and techniques available; to make sure this is feasible\, we provide materials for free. This also allows more confidence as using expensive personal materials tends to inhibit experimentation. \nYou are\, of course\, welcome to bring your own materials and follow your own path. \nWeeks 3 and 6 are a chance to work from one long pose with any material/technique you choose; the other weeks begin with warm-ups to help you prepare\, normally followed by one or two poses following a theme. \nSometimes the session is devoted to a worksheet-style drawing\, using many poses on one sheet in different materials.
