DESCRIPTION:Popular open days on a restored stretch of canal between near Chippenham are due to return this weekend.\nHundreds of people attended last year’s events at Pewsham Locks\, a flight of locks which once lifted narrowboats on their journey north along the Wilts & Berks Canal. \nVisitors can enjoy a pop-up café\, boat trips\, and tours of the building projects and wildflower meadow.\nThe first event takes place on Saturday 10th May and will be repeated on the second Saturday of each month until October. The café and tours open from 10am\, with boat trips available from 12.30pm\, before the event closes at around 3pm. \nThe open days are organised by the Melksham\, Chippenham & Calne branch of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. \nSpokesperson Bright Wright said: \nWe’re looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors and sharing the progress we’ve made in bringing this historic waterway back to life. People often enjoy walking or cycling along the towpath but this is a golden opportunity to learn so much more about the charity\, our local work and our plans for the future. \nWe’ll be offering guided tours of the dry dock and carpenter’s workshop\, which are due to be completed later this year\, as well as tours of the wildflower meadow and wildlife habitats. The boat rides are especially popular\, taking passengers to Double Bridge near Reybridge and back again. We also offer exclusive trips for community groups in the mornings. \nThese rides depend on the weather and the water levels though\, so we always advise people to check our social media for any late changes. Boats depart from the wharf at Pewsham Locks\, where the pop-up café offers plenty of tea\, coffee and cake\, and lots of seating beneath the trees – it’s a great location for a relaxing day out. \nThe site is just a short walk along a footpath from the edge of Pewsham. SUMMARY:Civil War Encampment 2025
DESCRIPTION:The English Civil War Society comes to Chippenham as Chippenham Town Council plays host to Sir Marmaduke Rawdon’s Regiment of Foote as they establish a Soldiers Encampment and Living History Village in Monkton Park. \nThe Island\, Monkton Park\, Saturday 14 – Sunday 15 June\n11am – 4pm \nIt’s 1643. It has been just a few days since Royalist Armies saw fierce fighting at Lansdown Hill near Bath\, before marching through Chippenham and on to Devizes. A detachment of Royalist soldiers is encamped by the river on Chippenham Island to ensure that the Town is protected from any enemy. Some of the Townsfolk have also set up camp nearby\, to display their wares for sale to the soldiers and any visitors. \nPlease feel free to visit the encampment\, find out more about Chippenham in the Civil War and watch the displays throughout the day. Don’t forget to take part in The Gunner’s Raffle and win a chance to fire the Cannon! \nThe programme is repeated both days: \n11am: The cannon opens fire with the first shot of the day\, ready to bombard any enemy approaching the town \n11.15am: The Musketeers practice firing their muskets\, reloading as fast as they can before opening fire once again \n11.45am: A demonstration of combat skills by the Pikemen; armoured soldiers with 16-foot-long spears tipped with steel \n12.15pm: The Colonel needs more new soldiers for his regiment and wants to train young people to become brave Pikemen \n12.45pm: Officers and Soldiers take a hurried meal before returning to their duties \n1.15pm: The Cannon ‘Gives Fire’ once again as the Gunners demonstrate how to load and fire under Battlefield conditions as fast as they can \n1.45pm: Journey of the Soldier from Queen Bess to Queen Anne: A visual demonstration revealing how the English soldier changed and adapted over 100 years \n2.30pm: A Drill and ‘Exercise of Armes’ by Rawdon’s Regiment – Pikemen\, Musketeers and Drums \n3.15pm: The Colonel (still) needs more new soldiers for his regiment and wants to train young people to become brave Pikemen \n3.45pm: Fierce combat as enemy soldiers attack the Campsite. \n17th Century trades and crafts will be demonstrated by the townsfolk which will include a working printing press giving out the latest news sheets with tidings of the War and other news. Here the re-enactors will be happy to meet visitors\, explain their work and share stories about Chippenham’s role in the English Civil War. \nLook forward to the main event on Saturday 25 July & Sunday 26 July 2026 when you will be able to see The King’s Army and the Roundhead Association together in a fight to decide whether the town will be Royalist or throw in its lot with Parliament!

DESCRIPTION:Come and hang out in the barn and listen to Adam’s story. \nFOOD! At 12 noon – Nacho builder table with milkshakes (on the house) for all 11-18’s. Please enter through the barn door off Old Road\, not through the pub garden. \nTalk starts at 12.30pm followed by Q and A with Adam. \nBorn and raised in rural Donegal during the 1980s and 90s\, Adam understood from a young age that he was different. He came out as gay at 15 and later as transgender at 18\, navigating his identity at a time when Ireland was still grappling with issues of acceptance and inclusion. At 27\, he returned to the closet — a testament to the societal pressures many LGBTQI+ individuals face — but in 2020\, at the age of 36\, Adam came out once again\, this time embracing his full\, authentic self. \nNow based in Dublin\, where he moved at 17\, Adam is proud of how far Ireland has come in embracing its LGBTQI+ community. He plays a key role in driving forward inclusive services and fostering community engagement\, helping to ensure that others don’t have to walk the path alone that he once \nBrought to you by Tell Your Story – A Rag and Bone Arts CIC and Knapsack Production collaboration – A National Lottery and DCMS funded project. \nThere will be 4-5 adults from our team present for safeguarding during the talk\, which is followed by ‘Pride Goes Acoustic’ – a live music gig at 2pm\, hosted by Riverbank Studio’s. DESCRIPTION:‘The most fun I have all week – I haven’t laughed so much in ages’ \nAlternate Monday’s at the Cause Arts Centre 7-9pm \nImprovisation Workshops delivered by Laura. \nIf you’re interested but not sure what it is – just come and watch a session and have a cup of tea! \nCome and join a lovely bunch of local budding thespians\, who like to mess about\, play games\, take part in drama exercises and generally have fun while learning how to think on the spot\, make up scenes and not be restricted by the script. \nYou’ll explore scenes\, develop strong characters then improvise the content with some idea of the outcomes – Mike Leigh style. Some of our short form games are like ‘Who’s line is it anyway’ if you’re old enough to remember that! \nIf you have always wanted to try some drama\, but are not sure that you want to commit\, just pop in and do the bits that you want to\, or just come and watch a session. We’d love you to join us – and can guarantee that you’ll meet some brilliant and supportive people along the way. \n\nBasic introduction\, get to know each other\, ground rules for improv and how to let your brain avoid filtering (too much)\nIntroduction to creating characters to use in scenes – emphasis on the physical.
