SUMMARY:Wiltshire and the World: John Aubrey and the Quest for Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:John Aubrey was born in the small hamlet of Easton Piercy\, near Kington St Michael. Four hundred years later\, this exhibition celebrates the life and work of this extraordinary individual. \nWhen Aubrey was born in 1626\, it seemed that life would never change. But when he was just sixteen\, the English Civil War broke out\, and things changed rapidly. As old certainties unravelled\, space was created for an explosion of new ideas. Not all of this change was positive\, however. Advances in some areas were met with destruction in others. \nThroughout his life\, Aubrey was on a quest for knowledge. He wanted to learn everything he could. He grew up in Wiltshire\, but his vision was global. What he observed in the local countryside\, its people and places\, he expanded into a wider\, interconnected view of the world. From the ancient monuments of prehistoric peoples to contemporary ballads sung in the streets\, nothing escaped his notice. Seeing and doing things for himself\, rather than relying on what had been done before\, was central to his understanding. \nWhen Aubrey could not gain first-hand experience\, he sought out those who could. He consulted and collaborated with a wide range of people. He was not concerned with their background; instead\, he proudly credited and celebrated the knowledge and experiences they held. \nAubrey’s insatiable thirst for knowledge left an extraordinary legacy. When he saw historically important places and objects being destroyed\, he recorded them before it was too late. He gathered the unfiltered life stories of both the important and the not so important people of his time. He also looked to the future\, with plans to create an environment in which science and learning could flourish in the Wiltshire countryside. \nThis exhibition brings original manuscripts\, paintings and books back to Wiltshire and the area Aubrey knew for the first time since his death in 1697. Through them\, we can witness John Aubrey’s quest for knowledge and be inspired to begin our own. \nThe exhibition forms part of the Chippenham – Our History project.

SUMMARY:The Power of the Particular: Brief Lives Creative Writing Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chippenham Museum Creative Writing Group for a series of linked workshops celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of local antiquarian and famous biographer\, John Aubrey. The workshops will be led by Lesley Taylor\, an experienced facilitator\, and will draw inspiration from Aubrey’s work and the museum’s summer exhibition. \nBorn in Kington St Michael in 1626\, Aubrey was a biographer\, archaeologist\, scientist\, naturalist\, and oral historian. He valued the minutiae of everyday life\, and his writing is rich with specific (and often witty) details that bring the past to life. \nDrawing on his most well-known work\, Brief Lives – written portraits of key figures of his day – the workshops will explore how to write with greater detail. Sessions will provide an opportunity to develop the skill of telling your own stories with clarity\, experimenting with a range of forms including flash fiction\, memoir\, poetry\, and creative non-fiction. \nSuitable for beginners and experienced writers alike\, this series of monthly workshops will culminate in An Evening with Aubrey at the museum\, where participants’ work will be shared and celebrated. The date for this celebratory event is to be confirmed. \nEach session costs £5 per person. Spaces are limited\, so booking is essential. Please contact the museum to reserve your place. \n \nFind out more about the Chippenham – Our History project on this website here.

SUMMARY:Chippenham Film Festival 2026: Tuesday 8th Sept - Sunday 13th Sept
DESCRIPTION:Building on the success of its inaugural 2024 event\, Chippenham Film Festival returns for its second year with an expanded programme and its first live director Q&A. \nOver the period Tuesday 8th to Sunday 13th September 2026\, the festival will bring five specially chosen films to the big screen at The Reel Cinema in Chippenham with live introductions and some associated community celebrations. \nThis year’s festival includes an exclusive live Q&A with Director Rob Petit\, following the Thursday 10th September screening of his acclaimed documentary ‘Underland’\, described as a “cinematic voyage beneath the surface of the Earth”. This will be hosted by Nick Freand Jones\, the producer of Moviedrome and Mark Kermode’s Secrets of Cinema. \nThe Saturday 12th screening of ‘Urchin’\, Harris Dickinson’s Cannes-winning drama about a rough sleeper\, is presented in partnership with Doorway Wiltshire\, with representatives from the charity introducing the film and speaking about its work supporting people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in the Chippenham area. All proceeds from individual ticket sales for this screening will go to Doorway Wiltshire. \nA new addition to the programme for this year is a film soundtrack album listening night at the Old Road Tavern on Wednesday 9th September. This will be a relaxed evening for film and music lovers to bring along their favourite soundtrack\, score or film-related LP (or CD)\, put them on the turntable and swap stories over a drink. This will take place in the Tavern’s barn\, starting at 7.30pm. For a voluntary charitable donation\, your treasured vinyl LP can also be cleaned and optionally housed in a new audiophile inner and polythene outer. \nThe full festival programme is: \nTuesday 8th September\, 7.30pm – ‘I’m Still Here’ (15)\, directed by Walter Salles. Winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. \nWednesday 9th September\, 7.30pm – Film Soundtrack Album Listening Event at the Old Road Tavern \nThursday 10th September\, 7.30pm – ‘Underland’ (12)\, directed by Rob Petit\, followed by an exclusive live Q&A with the Director\, hosted by Nick Freand Jones. \nSaturday 12th September\, 4.00pm – ‘Urchin’ (15)\, directed by Harris Dickinson\, screened in partnership with Doorway Wiltshire. \nSaturday 12th September\, 6.30pm – ‘Pillion’ (18)\, directed by Harry Lighton\, starring Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård. \nSunday 13th September\, 6.30pm – ‘Amélie’ (15)\, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. \nA wrap party will be held immediately after the final screening\, to which all Festival-pass holders and everyone attending the closing screening are invited\, at the Prince of Wales micro-pub on Station Hill.

SUMMARY:Chippenham Film Festival: Free Soundtrack Album Listening Event Social
DESCRIPTION:Although Chippenham Film Festival is mostly about film screenings\, we also love a social event. \nAs part of the festival\, on Wednesday 9th Sept from 7.30pm\, bring along your favourite film soundtrack or film/TV related vinyl LPs or CDs for everyone to hear on the Dorothy House hi-fi system. Tell us all why you love a particular soundtrack and the memories it brings back. \nThis is a free event open to everyone. \nFor a minimum donation of £5 to the Hospice you can also optionally have your treasured vinyl LP cleaned on an Okki-Nokki record cleaner\, with your newly pristine record placed in a new audiophile inner and outer cover to protect it. \nFilm Festival 2026 \n \n
