SUMMARY:The Arts Society Kington Langley July Lecture - Hybrid Illustrated Lecture
DESCRIPTION:‘Bombed\, Burned or Bulldozed’ – Britain’s Lost House‘. \nThere is something incomparably romantic about a long-lost country house\, and although Britain still possesses some of the finest of these architectural treasures to be found anywhere\, many have been destroyed.  A single ruined lodge or pavilion\, an over-grown drive or group of mature trees are sometimes all that now exists to remind us of a lost house and pleasure-ground. \nThis lecture tells the story of just some of these losses to our National Heritage – destroyed for a variety of reasons; from neglect\, arson\, enemy action\, incompetence\, family rivalry\, financial disaster or even insanity!  In the mid-twentieth century particularly\, profound social change\, wars\, high taxation and bad management often contributed to the demise of many grand houses. Hundreds were demolished after 1945 – some beautiful\, some ugly\, but each lost house\, as the lecture shows\, is fascinating in its own way. \nYou can join Matthew Williams (experienced lecturer\, writer and broadcaster) and us in either Kington Langley Village Hall or via zoom from 10:15am. DESCRIPTION:The River Run is back for 2022! \nThe 5k River Run and 2k Fun Run follow a largely traffic free multi-terrain route along the banks of the River Avon\, starting and finishing in Monkton Park\, near the Olympiad Leisure Centre. \nThe River Run is a great community event which attracts people of all abilities and ages. The 5k distance means that it is ideal for the beginners and the inclusion of the Fun Run makes it the perfect summer evening event for families. The 5k is open to anyone aged 13 and over and the Fun Run is for 4 – 14 year olds. \nPrizes in age categories for both races. All 5k finishers will receive a Tech T shirt with a brand new design for 2022. All Fun Run 2k finishers receive a medal.

DESCRIPTION:A talk with Euan Mckenzie (Ancient Woodland Inventory Officer at Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Record Centre) \nThe Ancient Woodland Inventory maps woodlands which are at least 400 years old. These irreplaceable habitats have been shaped by centuries of use for fuel and building materials\, but many are now under-managed or threatened from development. \nAs part of a Natural England-led project\, Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Records Centre (WSBRC) is gathering evidence to recreate the Inventory from scratch. This will include reviewing historical maps and documents held at WSHC\, as well as field surveys for woodland plants and archaeology. The new Inventory will capture ancient woodlands that are currently undesignated and help to protect them for future generations. \nThis talk will explore the historical and ecological value of ancient woodlands\, how we are approaching this significant piece of landscape history research\, and how volunteers can get involved. \nFREE but please book online. \nAs the county’s environmental records centre WSBRC has been collecting\, collating\, managing and interpreting biological data for over 40 years. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this fused glass workshop to make either a 5cm x 20cm sun-catcher\, or a 10cm x 10cm panel which can be framed or hung in a window. \nYou will be supplied with a pre-cut piece of glass of your choice\, plus a selection of coloured glass to complete your project. Once completed your tutor will take your work away and fire it in a kiln\, and you will be able to collect it from the museum on the following Saturday. All tools and materials are supplied. No experience is necessary. The workshop is suitable for anyone over the age of 10 years. \nYour tutor for the session is Pj Buchanan\, the owner and inspiration of SkyDog Glass. SUMMARY:Battle of Chippenham Re-enactment
DESCRIPTION:The English Civil War returns to Chippenham as the Town plays host to the English Civil War Society and the town is returned to the dramatic Summer of 1643 when the Civil War raged across Wiltshire and the West Country. \nEach afternoon there will be intense conflict as the Royalist and Roundhead Armies clash in Battle on Monkton Park with over 400 Pikemen\, Musketeers\, Gunners\, and Cavalry all taking part. This event\, inspired by a dramatic moment in Chippenham’s history will prove to be a massive weekend of Entertainment\, Excitement and Education by the English Civil War Society. \nAs in 1643\, Chippenham Village will also be occupied by Royalist soldiers from Sir Ralph Hopton’s army marching from the hard-fought battle at Lansdown Hill near Bath. Soldiers and Officers will be working at their Military Encampment while expecting a visit from their General Sir Ralph. A Regiment of Foote\, Cavalry on Horseback\, and Cannon will be taking part in further displays through the day for Visitors to see on Monkton Park. \nThere will be a large and thriving encampment and tented village on The Island\, Monkton Park\, where 17th Century trades and crafts will be demonstrated by the townsfolk and including a working printing press giving out the latest newssheets with tidings of the war and other news. Here the re-enactors will be happy to meet visitors\, explain their work and to share stories about Chippenham’s role in the English Civil War. \nCheck out the full timetable giving details of all the Displays through each day: –
