SUMMARY:Battle of Chippenham Re-enactment
DESCRIPTION:The English Civil War returns to Chippenham as the Town plays host to the English Civil War Society and the town is returned to the dramatic Summer of 1643 when the Civil War raged across Wiltshire and the West Country. \nEach afternoon there will be intense conflict as the Royalist and Roundhead Armies clash in Battle on Monkton Park with over 400 Pikemen\, Musketeers\, Gunners\, and Cavalry all taking part. This event\, inspired by a dramatic moment in Chippenham’s history will prove to be a massive weekend of Entertainment\, Excitement and Education by the English Civil War Society. \nAs in 1643\, Chippenham Village will also be occupied by Royalist soldiers from Sir Ralph Hopton’s army marching from the hard-fought battle at Lansdown Hill near Bath. Soldiers and Officers will be working at their Military Encampment while expecting a visit from their General Sir Ralph. A Regiment of Foote\, Cavalry on Horseback\, and Cannon will be taking part in further displays through the day for Visitors to see on Monkton Park. \nThere will be a large and thriving encampment and tented village on The Island\, Monkton Park\, where 17th Century trades and crafts will be demonstrated by the townsfolk and including a working printing press giving out the latest newssheets with tidings of the war and other news. Here the re-enactors will be happy to meet visitors\, explain their work and to share stories about Chippenham’s role in the English Civil War. \nCheck out the full timetable giving details of all the Displays through each day: –

Or where it happened or not. \nA boy pulled a sword from a stone and became King. A story of the old world\, with knights\, wizards\, mist and magic. \nThis fun and farcical adventure is a deliberately anarchic and anachronistic re-telling of the Arthurian Legend with live music\, physical comedy and lo-fi acrobatics. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this fused glass workshop to make either a 5cm x 20cm sun-catcher\, or a 10cm x 10cm panel which can be framed or hung in a window. \nYou will be supplied with a pre-cut piece of glass of your choice\, plus a selection of coloured glass to complete your project. Once completed your tutor will take your work away and fire it in a kiln\, and you will be able to collect it from the museum on the following Saturday. All tools and materials are supplied. No experience is necessary. The workshop is suitable for anyone over the age of 10 years. \nYour tutor for the session is Pj Buchanan\, the owner and inspiration of SkyDog Glass. Pj’s studio is located in Chippenham\, and she is currently one of the resident artists at The Corsham Gallery in Corsham. DESCRIPTION:The Box Ukulele Festival is a jam packed\, family-friendly day\, full of musical ukulele fun! A fantastic and varied line up of musical ukulele talent is scheduled\, with ukulele groups from near and far performing on stage throughout the day. \nIf you thought ukulele was just about George Formby then think again! This festival hosts bands catering to every taste! \nGates open at 1pm\, with live music throughout the afternoon and into the evening (ending at 11pm). Food stalls will be available and The Queen’s Head bars will be open\, with an outdoor bar and stage undercover in case of inclement British summer weather. \nEntrance is £10 per adult\, children are free and all proceeds will be donated to the wonderful Dorothy House Hospice Care. With happy ukulele sounds\, strum-alongs\, delicious food\, plenty to drink and a great village location this is a festival for music lovers young and old. \nSo come along and join us and bring your ukulele if you fancy a strum-along!

SUMMARY:Wiltshire's Woodland Biography: a new Ancient Woodland Inventory
DESCRIPTION:A talk with Euan Mckenzie (Ancient Woodland Inventory Officer at Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Record Centre) \nThe Ancient Woodland Inventory maps woodlands which are at least 400 years old. These irreplaceable habitats have been shaped by centuries of use for fuel and building materials\, but many are now under-managed or threatened from development. \nAs part of a Natural England-led project\, Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Records Centre (WSBRC) is gathering evidence to recreate the Inventory from scratch. This will include reviewing historical maps and documents held at WSHC\, as well as field surveys for woodland plants and archaeology. The new Inventory will capture ancient woodlands that are currently undesignated and help to protect them for future generations. \nThis talk will explore the historical and ecological value of ancient woodlands\, how we are approaching this significant piece of landscape history research\, and how volunteers can get involved. \nFREE but please book online. \nAs the county’s environmental records centre WSBRC has been collecting\, collating\, managing and interpreting biological data for over 40 years. We make this detailed information about the wildlife\, sites\, habitats and geology of Wiltshire & Swindon available to agreement holders\, customers and the public.
