DESCRIPTION:In our next Collection Conversation\, we will be joined by Jane King and Judith Beeby. \nJane King studied for her Masters in ceramics at Bath Spa University’s Corsham Court Campus. King’s ceramic sculptures combine opposites of form\, texture\, and colour as metaphors for perfection and imperfection\, control and chaos. \nJudith Beeby studied at Bath Spa University. Living in Wiltshire she is continually inspired by its beauty. Her most recent work is inspired by the encroachment of urban and industrial elements into the rural environment. She is fascinated by the debate about man vs nature and the soft beauty of an English landscape being enhanced by strong industrial shapes.

In this session you will learn through a variety of fun\, accessible and constructively challenging games and activities with the addition of professionally trained stage combat skills and techniques for anyone to master. \nSession 1: 10 – 12pm\nPizza (provided) from: 12 – 1pm\nSession 2: 1-3pm \nThe founder of Brazen Steel\, and a core member of the teaching team at Rebel Action\, Rebecca has spent time instructing at the Royal Shakespeare Company\, LAMDA and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Rebecca is nearing the end of her stage combat instructor apprenticeship with the Academy of Performance Combat\, and has helped to guide a plethora of students from their first taste of combat to daring fight scenes and everything in between.

SUMMARY:Waverley Album Listening Event Birthday Party
DESCRIPTION:This month’s event marks both the one-year anniversary of the opening of The Waverley bar in Chippenham and a full year of our monthly vinyl listening event fundraisers for Dorothy House Hospice in the bar. \nThis month we have versatile multi-instrumentalist Samuel Fox from Bristol coming along to play live for us. Samuel is deeply ingrained in Bristol’s music scene and works in many other bands with a repertoire spanning jazz\, R&B\, hip-hop\, indie-folk\, and pop\, whilst excelling in improvised music. He is a man of many talents: for example\, he also plays bass guitar for Sam Brookes’ indie-rock band Supalung and he toured Canada recently with them; and at Glastonbury this year\, he also played bass for the Welsh rap artist. Lemfreck. \nAt our event he will be showcasing tracks he has written for his own indie-folk project band that he calls Mossfellow. He does not yet have a physical release on vinyl or CD for his EP ‘Quotidian’ that came out at the end of May this year\, but we will be able to listen to a high-resolution digital copy to contrast with his live acoustic performance\, accompanied by his band member\, Nuala Honan. Samuel suggested we pair his work with an LP by Nick Drake\, who he cites as one of the key influences for the Mossfellow project\, so we will listen to Nick’s debut album ‘Five Leaves Left’. We have a brand-new copy of the vinyl LP to play which has been kindly loaned to us by the owner of Resolution Records in Bath\, who is also a keen supporter of Dorothy House Hospice. \nThe music starts at 8pm and there is no charge for entry\, but voluntary donations to the Hospice are welcomed. We will have a raffle of prizes to encourage you to dig deep – donations can be made in cash or by card via a dedicated online portal.

SUMMARY:Bat & Moth Evening at Baydons Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Join our annual quest for bats and moths in and around Baydons Meadow! \nMeet at 8.30pm on Friday\, 22nd August\, by the interpretation board and log seat near the cycle path and blue footbridge over the Avon. \nPaul Darby\, who used to work for the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust\, will chat about the bats and lend out several bat detectors for the evening so that we can listen out for the clicks from their calls as we look up for them flitting through the trees just after dusk. \nMichael Sammes\, amateur-lepidopterist of our group\, will talk about and show us any moths that visit the moth-trap and white sheet that he will put out there. He also hopes to have run his moth-trap on the previous evening in his garden nearby and so to reveal some moths that he has identified and temporarily captured which can then be released. \nBoth Paul and Michael are inquisitive and knowledgeable on all things in nature\, so it should prove an interesting evening. \nPlease see Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group website https://baydonsmeadow.org.uk/ for information about our volunteer group\, our management of the meadow and how you can get involved.
