SUMMARY:Lady Chatterley’s Cover: The Book Designs of Stephen Russ
DESCRIPTION:The post-war book designs of artist and teacher\, Stephen Russ\, are coming to life at Chippenham Museum. \nFrom the forties to the seventies\, Russ produced dozens of dust jackets\, from striking first editions of Graham Greene at Bodley Head to a wide range of titles at Collins\, including nature books and the famous Collins Crime Club. \nHe is perhaps best known for his work with Penguin\, designing covers for the main orange series\, the lesser-known music scores\, and the highly collectible Penguin Poets series. His phoenix motif for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover became famous during the 1960 obscenity trial and featured in the marketing that helped make the book a bestseller. \nThe exhibition also celebrates Russ’s thirty-year career as a tutor at the renowned Bath Academy of Art in Corsham\, brought together with the generous support of the Russ family and loans from the Penguin Archive and the University of Bristol.

DESCRIPTION:FOR AGES 18+ \nDrama Workshops with their basis in improvisation and devising\, but including script. \n‘The most fun I have all week’ \nMondays in 5 week blocks at the Cause Arts Centre\, Causeway Chippenham\nImprovers 7.30 – 9pm (Beginners 6 -7.30pm) \nFor those who’ve been coming to us for a while\, or who like to move a bit faster\, this session is for you. \nCome and join a lovely bunch of local budding thespians\, who like to mess about\, play games\, take part in drama exercises and generally have fun while learning how to think on the spot\, make up scenes and not always be restricted by the script. \nYou’ll explore scenes\, develop strong characters then improvise the content with some idea of the outcomes – Mike Leigh style. \nWe’ll also be developing some scenes and creating longer pieces\, so be prepared. DESCRIPTION:Walking Hockey is exactly as the name suggests – you play Hockey while walking – and is perfect for players who are looking for a less physically demanding version of the sport\, but still enjoy participating\, showing their skills and being involved in the team and social aspect of the sport. \nThe game is played on a smaller pitch with lighter balls and rules adapted for safety and accessibility. \nWe operate a weekly social mixed game at 6pm on Monday evenings all year round. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome. There’s always laughter and quite often the chance for a social drink afterwards if you feel like it!

DESCRIPTION:The Rotary Club of Chippenham and Calne\nClassic Car and Bike Run\nSunday 17th May 2026 \nOur carefully composed routes are changed every year. Drivers or riders pass through Wiltshire countryside\, with highlights like Silbury Hill and Avebury Stone Circle: that is why many of our drivers return year on year. It will be lovely to have you back\, or maybe joining us for the first time. \nThis year’s Classic Car and Bike Run takes place on Sunday 17th May and will follow a 70 mile. \nClassic Cars and Bikes start arriving at 8.00 am at Calne Leisure Centre\, SN11 0SP Car Park\, with breakfast provided by Calne Lions. The best opportunity for the public to see all the cars and wave them off at the start is between 8.00 am and 10.00 am at Calne Leisure Centre. The morning coffee stop is at the Treehouse Café in the beautiful Bowood Estate\, and the finish is at Sheldon School\, Chippenham SN14 6HJ\, with lunch available. \nDogs are welcome (on a short lead)\, and of course there are prizes for the Best Dressed Driver/Passengers\, Cutest Dog\, President’s Favourite Car\, and the best Teddy or other much loved toy. \nThe event is open to cars\, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles that are 25 years or older. The number of entrants will be limited to 100 to prevent bunching on the route and to facilitate parking both before the run and at the coffee stop. You’ll head home with your own painting\, plus a booklet of tips and inspiration to keep you painting. \nAll materials (and plenty of encouragement) are provided and all levels are welcome\, whether you’re an art enthusiast or have never picked up a paintbrush before. No experience needed\, just a love of nature and creativity! \nThe only thing you’ll need to bring is the picture you’d like to paint! DESCRIPTION:The post-war book designs of artist and teacher\, Stephen Russ\, are coming to life at Chippenham Museum. \nFrom the forties to the seventies\, Russ produced dozens of dust jackets\, from striking first editions of Graham Greene at Bodley Head to a wide range of titles at Collins\, including nature books and the famous Collins Crime Club. \nHe is perhaps best known for his work with Penguin\, designing covers for the main orange series\, the lesser-known music scores\, and the highly collectible Penguin Poets series. His phoenix motif for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover became famous during the 1960 obscenity trial and featured in the marketing that helped make the book a bestseller. \nThe exhibition also celebrates Russ’s thirty-year career as a tutor at the renowned Bath Academy of Art in Corsham\, brought together with the generous support of the Russ family and loans from the Penguin Archive and the University of Bristol.

DESCRIPTION:Uniquely designed and delivered 6 x 6 week courses for those with some experience or who want to extend their skills further. \nTuesdays at 12.30 – 2.30pm at the Cause Arts Centre\, Causeway Chippenham (you can find all of our locations at the bottom of our website with maps) \nTerm 1: September 16th – October 21st 2025 – Still Life (drawing)\nTerm 2: November 4th – December 9th 2025 – Objects (interiors)\nTerm 3: January 6th – February 10th 2026 – Portraits (painting)\nTerm 4: February 24th – March 31st 2026. – Interiors (drawing)\nTerm 5: April 14th – May 19th 2026 – Landscape (painting)\nTerm 6: June 2nd – July 7th 2026 – Still Life (mixed media\, collage) \nTaught by local artist and designer Charlie who has over 25 years experience teaching art in a range of settings from Further and Higher Education colleges and universities and leisure courses. \nPlease note: courses begin with drawing\, and include a talk about relevant art movements and practitioners. \n£102 per term (with an optional £10 materials donation) – 6 weeks of 2 hour sessions\, includes materials and tea/coffee (donations welcome to help with refreshment costs).
