SUMMARY:Lady Chatterley’s Cover: The Book Designs of Stephen Russ
DESCRIPTION:The post-war book designs of artist and teacher\, Stephen Russ\, are coming to life at Chippenham Museum. \nFrom the forties to the seventies\, Russ produced dozens of dust jackets\, from striking first editions of Graham Greene at Bodley Head to a wide range of titles at Collins\, including nature books and the famous Collins Crime Club. \nHe is perhaps best known for his work with Penguin\, designing covers for the main orange series\, the lesser-known music scores\, and the highly collectible Penguin Poets series. His phoenix motif for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover became famous during the 1960 obscenity trial and featured in the marketing that helped make the book a bestseller. \nThe exhibition also celebrates Russ’s thirty-year career as a tutor at the renowned Bath Academy of Art in Corsham\, brought together with the generous support of the Russ family and loans from the Penguin Archive and the University of Bristol.

SUMMARY:Harriet Willes' Ball
DESCRIPTION:Dearest Gentle Reader… You are cordially invited to Harriet Willes’ Ball.\nMiss Harriet Willes invites you to attend an afternoon of her favourite dances\, as documented in her own hand. \nEvent part of Chippenham Folk Festival\, in partnership with Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.\nNo experience necessary. All dances taught on the day. \nDress up regency style\, as your favourite Jane Austen or Bridgerton character\, or come as you are. \nHarriet Willes was the sister of the vicar of the village of Christian Malford in the 1790s\, and collected tunes and dances in her musical scrapbooks\, now held in the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.\nShe probably knew Jane Austen. A project\, “Music.Heritage.Place.”\, unearthed her collection in 2024\, and this ball will have tunes and dances unplayed for more than 200 years. \nThis event is part of the Chippenham – Our History project.

SUMMARY:Teens & tweens rapper sword dancing workshop
DESCRIPTION:If you’re aged 11-17\, and ever fancied learning to dance while tied up in bendy metal swords… or even if you’ve never even thought about it but like the idea of adding a bit of thrill to your dancing… then this fabulous high-energy workshop is for you. \nRapper is a fast-paced\, traditional English sword dance originating from 19th-century coal mining communities in Northumberland and Durham\, and uses flexible double-handled swords to create tight formations.\nThere’s a look at it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx6MzgX-nL4 \nIt’ll be taught by NYFTE (National Youth Folk Troupe of England)\, who are all aged between 10 and 18\, and are experts in rapper dance teaching\, and will introduce the dance form to participants right from the beginning. \nNo experience necessary. Just wear a pair of hard-soled shoes. \nJust £3 on the door\, or £25 for a full weekend folk festival youth ticket (which includes all ceilidhs\, dances\, workshops\, concerts and events) if you’re aged 11-17.

SUMMARY:Chippenham Walking Rugby - open to all genders and ages!
DESCRIPTION:Join our welcoming\, all-inclusive group of men and women for Walking Rugby\, a fun\, low-impact version of the sport that’s great for all ages and fitness levels. \nWhat is Walking Rugby?\nIn Walking Rugby there are no scrums\, lineouts\, rucks or mauls. To make a tackle\, simply touch the ball carrier with two hands – the ball carrier must then stop and pass the ball to another player on their team.\nNo-one keeps score\, instead the emphasis is on enjoyable and social rugby for all.\nFor more information see the RFU’s video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAdPp6FS2q4 \nWhat do I need?\nAll you need is sports wear\, studded boots (don’t worry if you don’t have any we have some we can lend you some) as we normally play on our artificial pitch\, and a bottle of water (believe us you will need it!)\, and remember …..we are WALKING! \nWhen and Where?\nWe meet every Friday at Chippenham Rugby Club\, 6.30pm until 7.30pm. We join up with other local rugby clubs on a regular basis to share enjoyable evenings of rugby and socialising\, and also attend festivals hosted by other clubs which includes at least one each year where we are “on tour” \nIf you want to join in whether you have played before or are new to rugby and whatever your gender\, please drop David Cowan an email on walkers@chippenhamrfc.co.uk and he will coordinate. \nCome and give it a ‘Try’!!! \n
