SUMMARY:Capturing Chippenham’s Wild Side
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, Chippenham Museum Photo Club will be heading out and about to explore the local wildlife. From riverscapes to wildflower meadows\, there is so much to see and enjoy in and around our town\, and the group will be busy on their club nights capturing the wild and wonderful with their cameras. \nLed by experienced photographer Steve Jones from The Little Photo Company\, Photo Club will be running two special edition sessions. Would you like to join in? \nSession 1: Wednesday 8 April\, 2pm – 3.30pm\nThe group will be heading to Westmead Open Space\, a wonderful wildlife hotspot. We will spend an afternoon exploring this beautiful riverside green\, space managed by Chippenham Borough Lands Charity. \nSession 2: Wednesday 20 May\, 4.30pm – 5.30pm\nThe group will be exploring Vincients Wood\, a semi-natural broadleaved woodland\, managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. \nAs well as developing practical camera skills\, we will investigate the areas and learn more about our local wildlife and natural environment. \nThese special one-off sessions are free and open to any young person aged 11-17. No photography experience is needed. All cameras are welcome\, including mobile phones\, and a club camera is available to borrow if required. \nYou will also have the opportunity to have your work celebrated in a public exhibition during Chippenham’s Eco Future Fest on Sunday 14 June. Eco Future Fest is a community festival celebrating our natural world and all things sustainable. The event will take place at Chippenham Town Hall from 11am to 4pm. \nPlaces are limited\, so booking via Eventbrite is essential.

DESCRIPTION:In May’s installment of the museum’s free art talk series\, they will be joined Alma Boyes and Helen Harris. \nAlma Boyes studied ceramics and sculpture at the Bath Academy of Art\, Corsham\, and a Masters in Ceramic Design at North Staffordshire Polytechnic. Boyes worked as a sculptor and enlarger at the Morris Singer Foundry\, working on sculptures for prominent artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi\, as well as making her own work in bronze. Her work both in ceramics and bronze has been heavily influenced by her early days exploring ceramic techniques at the Bath Academy of Art. \nHelen Harris studied visual communication at the Bath Academy of Art\, Corsham\, becoming a Fellow in Photography in 1981-2. She taught photography at Corsham and Central Saint Martins\, continuing to teach at Bath Spa University until 2020. Her photographic practice explores the experience of time and place\, with a particular focus on the weaving of cultural and natural histories within the landscape of the South West of England. Walking and collecting are an integral part of her process. SUMMARY:The Power of the Particular: Brief Lives Creative Writing Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chippenham Museum Creative Writing Group for a series of linked workshops celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of local antiquarian and famous biographer\, John Aubrey. The workshops will be led by Lesley Taylor\, an experienced facilitator\, and will draw inspiration from Aubrey’s work and the museum’s summer exhibition. \nBorn in Kington St Michael in 1626\, Aubrey was a biographer\, archaeologist\, scientist\, naturalist\, and oral historian. He valued the minutiae of everyday life\, and his writing is rich with specific (and often witty) details that bring the past to life. \nDrawing on his most well-known work\, Brief Lives – written portraits of key figures of his day – the workshops will explore how to write with greater detail. Sessions will provide an opportunity to develop the skill of telling your own stories with clarity\, experimenting with a range of forms including flash fiction\, memoir\, poetry\, and creative non-fiction. \nSuitable for beginners and experienced writers alike\, this series of monthly workshops will culminate in An Evening with Aubrey at the museum\, where participants’ work will be shared and celebrated. The date for this celebratory event is to be confirmed. \nEach session costs £5 per person. Spaces are limited\, so booking is essential. DESCRIPTION:This month a representative from F.W. Jones will give a talk on The Funerals of Chippenham’s History. Frederick William Jones began the business as both a funeral director and cabinetmaker in 1930. Since then\, the business has progressed through two successive Jones generations\, serving the community of Chippenham throughout those years. The F.W. Jones team of today will present how the business evolved from 1930 to now\, highlighting some very important and unique funerals along the way. We hope you can join us in the museum’s Education Room. \nNon-members who attend are invited to donate £2 to Friends of Chippenham Museum; annual membership is £5 per person\, renewed each July. If you are interested in joining\, please visit the website to download a membership form or pop into the museum on your next visit. \nFriends of Chippenham Museum supports the museum by fundraising\, promoting activities and organising an enjoyable social programme for members. Being a Friend gives you the opportunity to receive newsletters with special interest articles and news from the Museum\, attend monthly coffee afternoons called Heritage Café for socialising and special interest talks\, and take part in special activities such as local trips\, parties\, events\, etc. \nThe Friends of the Museum group was launched in June 2012 with the help of a small\, dedicated band of volunteers\, celebrating with a special event in the town’s Yelde Hall\, the home of the original museum. \nOur main aim at the time was to build a bridge between the museum and the public\, increasing local engagement and making the institution more approachable. \nToday\, that relationship has worked exceptionally well. DESCRIPTION:The post-war book designs of artist and teacher\, Stephen Russ\, are coming to life at Chippenham Museum. \nFrom the forties to the seventies\, Russ produced dozens of dust jackets\, from striking first editions of Graham Greene at Bodley Head to a wide range of titles at Collins\, including nature books and the famous Collins Crime Club. \nHe is perhaps best known for his work with Penguin\, designing covers for the main orange series\, the lesser-known music scores\, and the highly collectible Penguin Poets series. His phoenix motif for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover became famous during the 1960 obscenity trial and featured in the marketing that helped make the book a bestseller. \nThe exhibition also celebrates Russ’s thirty-year career as a tutor at the renowned Bath Academy of Art in Corsham\, brought together with the generous support of the Russ family and loans from the Penguin Archive and the University of Bristol.
