DESCRIPTION:I’m happy to announce the next two static sessions of History Portal Club\, planned for September. \nHistory Portal Club is friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company.\nIt’s a great way to explore the local area’s past together – no lectures\, no stuffy rooms\, just walking\, talking\, pub chats\, and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks. \nOn Tuesday 16 September we’ll be delving into all things Awdry – Just Who Were The Awdrys Anyway? – looking at various members of the prominent 19th & 20th century family whose name peppers the town. \nTogether we’ll explore the characters in one of Chippenham’s best known families.\nWho were they?\nWhat did they do?\nWhy are they so important to the town? \nThis fun club session will discuss and explore a few key members of the Awdry family from the 19th and early 20th centuries\, and how they relate to Chippenham past and present. \nThere’s more information on both the sessions here – www.lucywhitfieldhistorian.co.uk/history-club – and on how History Portal Club works. \nWe’re a friendly and very welcoming group. DESCRIPTION:The opening taster meeting for History Portal Club. \nTogether we’ll explore myths and truths about various tunnels believed to exist under the town.\nWhere are they?\nWho built them?\nWhere do they go?\nWhy do we love the idea of a secret tunnel? \nThis fun opening session will look at the subject from all angles\, and also help to establish the direction of the History Portal Club going forward. \nHistory Portal Club aims to be a different sort of history club. No lectures\, no stuffy rooms\, just walking\, talking\, pub chats and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks. It’s about finding value in ordinary lives and heritage\, and connecting with places. A meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company. Taking on topics we see around us every day. \nA club that isn’t afraid to ask “what is history anyway”? One that values and encourages ordinary experiences\, doesn’t subscribe to the way history was traditionally taught\, and values nostalgia and memory as well as books and facts. \nIt’s a meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past\, hidden landmarks\, and great company. \nThere’s no obligation to become a member\, just come along and give it a try. And\, after this\, there’ll be a programme of topics (walks and static) as we go into the autumn.
