SUMMARY:The Power of the Particular: Brief Lives Creative Writing Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chippenham Museum Creative Writing Group for a series of linked workshops celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of local antiquarian and famous biographer\, John Aubrey. The workshops will be led by Lesley Taylor\, an experienced facilitator\, and will draw inspiration from Aubrey’s work and the museum’s summer exhibition. \nBorn in Kington St Michael in 1626\, Aubrey was a biographer\, archaeologist\, scientist\, naturalist\, and oral historian. He valued the minutiae of everyday life\, and his writing is rich with specific (and often witty) details that bring the past to life. \nDrawing on his most well-known work\, Brief Lives – written portraits of key figures of his day – the workshops will explore how to write with greater detail. Sessions will provide an opportunity to develop the skill of telling your own stories with clarity\, experimenting with a range of forms including flash fiction\, memoir\, poetry\, and creative non-fiction. \nSuitable for beginners and experienced writers alike\, this series of monthly workshops will culminate in An Evening with Aubrey at the museum\, where participants’ work will be shared and celebrated. The date for this celebratory event is to be confirmed. \nEach session costs £5 per person. Spaces are limited\, so booking is essential. DESCRIPTION:In November’s Collection Conversation\, we will be joined by Chris Dunn and Andrew Lansley. \nAfter studying at Bath Spa University\, Chris Dunn worked as a freelance illustrator producing portraits and conceptual illustrations. A commission to illustrate the Wind in the Willow\, has led to him beginning a full-time artist specialising in traditional children’s book watercolour illustration. He now works from Calne where the surrounding countryside is a constant source of inspiration \nAndrew Lansley produces work from many different but direct sources. This may entail a variety of material abstractions or work directly related to impressions and experience of the landscape. In using raw pigments combined with a variety of mediums he achieves a direct connection to the elemental quality of landscape. She has taken elements of this industry and adapted them to a studio environment. Sasha has concentrated on perfecting the craft-based skills which enhance the inherent qualities of bone china and her carefully produced distinctive work embraces and reflects contemporary taste and lifestyle. \nHelen Wilks was a student at the Bath Academy of Art\, Corsham. She is a narrative painter\, probably best known for three cycles of works: Childhood Fragments\, Punch & Judy and The Inhabited Space. King’s ceramic sculptures combine opposites of form\, texture\, and colour as metaphors for perfection and imperfection\, control and chaos. \nJudith Beeby studied at Bath Spa University. Living in Wiltshire she is continually inspired by its beauty. Her most recent work is inspired by the encroachment of urban and industrial elements into the rural environment. She is fascinated by the debate about man vs nature and the soft beauty of an English landscape being enhanced by strong industrial shapes.

Sessions run from 9am-10am (last entry 9.45am) and are limited to four accompanied children. \nIdeal for those who would find the busy nature of our drop-in sessions uncomfortable\, these sessions offer a relaxed environment. Please book a space for each accompanied child attending. \nPlease note\, activities on Tuesday and Thursday will be the same each week. \nWeek 3: Shapes and Colour Palettes \nExplore the expression of power and meaning in colour and pattern\, then blend ideas to create our own pattern colour wheel.
