DESCRIPTION:Murder Mystery evening in support of Chippenham Lions Club \nA murder has occurred on the eve of a magicians tour – can you solve the case? \nSaturday 7th March (19.30 – 22.30)\nDoors will open at 19.15 with the evening starting shortly after 19.30.\nKington Langley Village Hall SN15 5NS \nTickets are £25 per person.\n2 course dinner – a table platter ‘sharing ploughmans’ (which may feature: Cheese\, Quiche\, Pork Pie\, Pickles\, Salad and Bread) and a cold dessert. SUMMARY:Arts Society Lecture : Donatello and the birth of the Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:In the early decades of the 15th century\, the small city state of Florence was the birthplace of an astonishing\, bloodless\, revolution\, now known as the renaissance.\nMany of its painters\, composers\, musicians\, architects\, thinkers\, philosophers and patrons knew and influenced each other. None more so than the sculptor\, Donatello\, (above) who created new worlds out of stone\, suffusing it with drama\, humanity and tenderness.\nIn the wake of a major exhibition at the V and A\, the lecture looks at how he\, in harness with many other renaissance figures who are part of his journey\, changed the face of European culture for ever.\nArts Society Lecturer: Sarah Dunant.\nSarah is a novelist\, broadcaster and critic. Sarah read history at Cambridge\, then worked for many years as a cultural journalist in radio and television on such programmes as Kaleidoscope (BBC Radio 4)\, The Late Show (BBC 2)\, and Night Waves/Free Thinking (BBC Radio 3). She is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s A Point of View and these talks\, alongside her series on history for Radio 4\, When Greeks Flew Kites are available on podcast or BBC sounds. \nThis lecture is part of Kington Langley’s Monthly Lecture Series and members will receive notification as a matter of course. SUMMARY:The Arts Society Kington Langley July Lecture - Hybrid Illustrated Lecture
DESCRIPTION:‘Bombed\, Burned or Bulldozed’ – Britain’s Lost House‘. \nThere is something incomparably romantic about a long-lost country house\, and although Britain still possesses some of the finest of these architectural treasures to be found anywhere\, many have been destroyed.  A single ruined lodge or pavilion\, an over-grown drive or group of mature trees are sometimes all that now exists to remind us of a lost house and pleasure-ground. \nThis lecture tells the story of just some of these losses to our National Heritage – destroyed for a variety of reasons; from neglect\, arson\, enemy action\, incompetence\, family rivalry\, financial disaster or even insanity!  In the mid-twentieth century particularly\, profound social change\, wars\, high taxation and bad management often contributed to the demise of many grand houses. Hundreds were demolished after 1945 – some beautiful\, some ugly\, but each lost house\, as the lecture shows\, is fascinating in its own way. \nYou can join Matthew Williams (experienced lecturer\, writer and broadcaster) and us in either Kington Langley Village Hall or via zoom from 10:15am.
