SUMMARY:Treasures from the Archives – Explore\, Discover\, Discuss
DESCRIPTION:Make 2025 your year of discovery and join our new Treasures from the Archives group. This is an opportunity for you to explore some of the amazing documents in the Wiltshire and Swindon Archive collections in a friendly and informal setting. \nThe group meets every other month on a Saturday\, led by Community History Advisor Gianna Torchia. Each hour-long session will focus on an original document that will be explored and discussed to reveal the creative side of archives through the stories of people\, places or events. Gianna hopes to inspire members to get creative using information from the original documents. An information pack\, including transcriptions and reading lists\, will be available at the end of each session. \nEach session has a different theme which will provide you with an opportunity to explore not only the original documents\, but also to look at recreations made by Gianna especially for the session\, such as knitting from historic patterns and tasting products made using original recipes. \nTreasures from the Archives is the ideal introduction to exploring Wiltshire’s history and expanding your understanding and knowledge of the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre’s collections. \nThe sessions are free and will run every other month on a Saturday from 11:00 to 12:00. \nFor more information contact archives@wiltshire.gov.uk or tel 01249 705500

SUMMARY:Women's History: Maud Heath & Beyond\, Exploring the Lives of Women Before 1600
DESCRIPTION:Maud Heath is one of Wiltshire’s most well-known mediaeval women\, with a causeway named after her and monuments raised in her honour. Yet she is one of many women of Wiltshire before 1600 whose lives are notable and worthy of celebration\, but whose stories are not studied or recounted. \nThis study day explores women’s history before 1600—women’s diverse impacts on the society\, economy\, religion and politics of the world around them. The event will feature papers and discussions and will draw\, in part\, on academics involved in the Victoria County History project\, presenting their insights from research in place-based histories from Wiltshire and beyond. \nThe event is specifically designed to promote the long-overlooked discipline of women’s history and will appeal to local history enthusiasts\, historians\, genealogists and anyone interested in women’s lives in Wiltshire past. \nThe keynote speaker is Professor Catherine Clarke\, Director of the History of People\, Place and Community at the Institute of Historical Research who will question the role of Artificial Intelligence in women’s history research with a fascinating look at whether AI can reflect back our own assumptions\, prejudices\, and gaps in our historical knowledge\, and if there ways we can use generative AI productively\, to re-visit gaps and uncertainties\, to re-tell women’s stories\, and start new conversations? \nThis study day forms part of the Maud Heath National Lottery Funded project which provides free entry to this event but places can be booked via Eventbrite. \nMaud Heath and Beyond: Exploring the Lives of Women Before 1600 at The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre event tickets from TicketSource. \nFree parking is available in front of the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre\, which is a 5–10 minute walk from Chippenham Railway Station. \nFor further information contact Emily Malcolm\, email emily@yesterdaysstory.co.uk

SUMMARY:Let's build LEGO Chippenham! Fringe Feb
DESCRIPTION:We’re calling on children\, families\, creatives and anyone who loves Lego to come and help us build a version of Chippenham marketplace as it was in 1886. \nGot a hankering to have a go at making the Yelde Hall? Always fancied trying to recreate the Angel Hotel or wanted to construct the Buttercross? \nBased in the History Centre’s education room with local historian Lucy Whitfield\, we’ve got a huge detailed map to work from\, loads of photographs of the buildings\, and tons of enthusiasm – but we also need you and your building skills to try to create the centre of town as it once was. But\, accuracy isn’t the most important thing\, and we don’t mind if your version of the Old Palace (now Chippenham Museum) is green and blue and has extra turrets – it’s coming and having a go that counts.  \nWe’ll also take all donations of Lego for our attempt\, both in the run up to the event and even on the day – bring them to WSHC reception\, or Chippenham Library. All donations will be given to Chippenham Library’s Lego Club after we’ve finished creating our masterpiece. \n\nOpen to all but aimed at Key Stages 1 & 2\nFree tickets available – please book here\nFree parking\n\n\nThis event is part of a three-day arts festival happening around Chippenham from the 23rd-25th February. Find out more about Chippenham Fringe Feb 2024 and the other creative and vibrant Fringe performances and activities taking place by visiting here. \nChippenham Fringe Feb is produced and delivered by Melt Productions in collaboration with Chippenham Borough Lands Charity (CBLC) and the Chippenham Chat group. SUMMARY:Rooted Chippenham Community Gardening
DESCRIPTION:We would love to see some new faces as we get going for 2023. We have a real variety of tasks this year\, from building pathways and water collection\, to sowing seeds and tending the veg. The garden is for the whole community – so the more input from our community the better! \nWe are using organic no dig beds – a method that has so many benefits for plants\, and the eaters of plants\, alike! We are getting more raised beds in place this year which will open up the garden to more people. We are also planning to get a poly tunnel on site – which will expand the range of veg we can grow. There is so much we are looking forward to – we hope you can come and share it all with us! \nYou can join our group Rooted Chippenham Community Garden to keep up-to-date with what’s going on and connect with our growing gang!

SUMMARY:Wiltshire's Woodland Biography: a new Ancient Woodland Inventory
DESCRIPTION:A talk with Euan Mckenzie (Ancient Woodland Inventory Officer at Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Record Centre) \nThe Ancient Woodland Inventory maps woodlands which are at least 400 years old. These irreplaceable habitats have been shaped by centuries of use for fuel and building materials\, but many are now under-managed or threatened from development. \nAs part of a Natural England-led project\, Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Records Centre (WSBRC) is gathering evidence to recreate the Inventory from scratch. This will include reviewing historical maps and documents held at WSHC\, as well as field surveys for woodland plants and archaeology. The new Inventory will capture ancient woodlands that are currently undesignated and help to protect them for future generations. \nThis talk will explore the historical and ecological value of ancient woodlands\, how we are approaching this significant piece of landscape history research\, and how volunteers can get involved. \nFREE but please book online. \nAs the county’s environmental records centre WSBRC has been collecting\, collating\, managing and interpreting biological data for over 40 years. We make this detailed information about the wildlife\, sites\, habitats and geology of Wiltshire & Swindon available to agreement holders\, customers and the public. By providing a range of data services we ensure that the data we hold is used to help monitor and protect the counties wildlife and habitats. http://wsbrc.org.uk/about-us/ \nThe Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre houses the county Wiltshire & Swindon Archive and Local Wiltshire Studies Library\, Archaeology team\, Wiltshire Buildings Record and the Conservation and Museums Advisory Service. https://wshc.org.uk/
