Why Did Chippenham Have Two Riots?

I’m happy to announce the next two static sessions of History Portal Club, planned for September.

History Portal Club is friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past, hidden landmarks, and great company. It’s a great way to explore the local area’s past together – no lectures, no stuffy rooms, just walking, talking, pub chats, and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks.

On Tuesday 30 September we’ll explore the two periods of unrest Chippenham experienced – Why Did Chippenham Have Two Riots? – looking at causes, effects, and how we frame these both today and in the 19th century when they occurred.

Together we’ll explore and dissect the two incidents of unrest in the 19th century.
What happened?
Who was involved?
Where did they take place?

This club session will explore the action from all angles, looking at cause and effect and tragic outcome, and put the two riots into context, from the perspective of the times they occurred and our modern viewpoints.
