Mortimores Wood lies just one mile from the centre of the busy town of Chippenham, providing a haven of tranquillity from the bustle of modern life. It is a small area of Ancient woodland with a recorded history extending back over 800 years and it houses a diversity of plant and bird life only found in such old woodlands. Mortimores Wood is both a designated County Wildlife Site and Local Nature Reserve.
The wood is owned by the Chippenham Borough Lands Charity and managed by the Mortimores Wood Volunteers.
The aim of the Mortimores Wood Volunteer Group is to restore, on a non-commercial basis, the management system which resulted in this diversity, to maintain the predominant character of the wood, and to improve access to some areas.
Regular work includes: –
- path maintenance
- coppicing
- bramble clearing
No previous experience necessary – new volunteers will be supported and trained as appropriate. All that is needed is a willingness to get stuck in, sensible footwear and clothing.
Work takes place between 10.00am & 1.00pm on the second Sunday of every month. We meet at the main entrance to the wood shortly before 10.00am. Please get in contact before your first session. For safety reasons, children cannot participate in some workday tasks.
