History Portal Club: Are there tales from Chippenham workhouse?

June 9 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
£10 – £14

An interactive exploration of local history together, where questions are encouraged and knowledge is shared, this meeting of History Portal Club will take a look at Chippenham Union Workhouse through the ages.

Together, we’ll do a deep dive into the history of the local union workhouse (now the hospital) – through the eyes of the town, the staff, and the inmates who found themselves within its walls.

Who ran the place?
What was it like inside?
Are there inmates’ stories?

This friendly and interactive club session will explore the history of the workhouse, right from its origins to its conversion into St Andrew’s Hospital, taking in the life of the buildings that supported the poor and needy of the town.

Booking essential.

History Portal Club is a friendly regular meet-up for curious locals who love stories from the past, hidden landmarks, and great company.
It’s a great way to explore the local area’s past together – no lectures, no stuffy rooms, just walking, talking, pub chats, and stories you won’t find in the guidebooks.
Fascinating tales, good company, and plenty of surprises.

It’s run by Lucy Whitfield, Historian. Visit www.lucywhitfieldhistorian/history-club for more information and to book.
