Chippenham Film Club November Screening: ‘Planet Israel’ (15) with Director Q&A

November 10 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
£10.49 – £35

Chippenham Film Club was founded in 2022 to bring films to the town that would not normally be seen on the big screen in Chippenham. Anyone can attend but members get a 35% discount.

The November screening is ‘Planet Israel’ (rated 15) on Tuesday 10th November at 7.30pm and will be followed by a live Q&A session with the film’s director, Gillian Mosely.

Gillian Mosely began producing documentary films in 1997, creating, developing, producing and executive producing a wide range of high-end documentaries for Arte, BBC, Channel 4, Discovery, History, ITV, NatGeo, PBS and ZDF among others. These include ‘Ancient Egypt: Life and Death in the Valley of the Kings’ and ‘Mummifying Alan.’ In ‘Planet Israel’, through the use of contemporary footage, news bulletins, first hand accounts and interviews, the film seeks to explore the complicated interplay between the inhabitants of Israel and their government.

After October 7th the world was shocked and sympathetic following the Hamas attacks in Israel. Within a few short months most of this sympathy had gone as the world recoiled in horror at the brutality of the Israeli response to these attacks, while 73% of Israeli Jews are seemingly unperturbed. As a British-American Jew Gillian wants to know what has happened to make any Jews, a people who have experienced oppression, othering, and genocide, exhibit such moral and humanitarian numbness. More widely, how does the moral disengagement that allows atrocities the world over, happen? In her quest to understand, Gillian meets people across numerous areas of expertise including mental health, politics, the mediascape, and religion. Gillian thought she was making a film about trauma. But the reality turned out to be so much darker than she’d imagined as the mechanisms behind our disintegrating democracies and international laws are exposed.
