Could you be our next School Governor?

St Paul’s Primary School

Don’t think you fit the image of a typical school governor? You could be exactly who we need!!

Diversity of skills, experience and perspective is essential in an effective governing board, and St Paul’s Primary School are still seeking members of the local community to join our governing board.

Independent governors, who have no existing relationship with the school as staff or parents, are also vital to maintain impartial balance.

Lots of backgrounds have transferable skills that are valuable to governing boards, including marketing, HR, data analysis, legal, project management, local government – as well as education of course.

What is a school governor?

School governors have a varied and important role in helping their school run effectively and be the best it can be.

The governing board plans the strategic direction of a school, makes sure public money is well spent, and holds leadership to account for the school’s performance.

Whatever your professional background, your skills could help support our school. You don’t need to be a parent/carer, or have worked in education. Governing boards need people with a diverse range of skills and backgrounds to run effectively.

The most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work.

St. Paul’s Primary School currently has 3 vacancies on the governing board, so is seeking members of the community to join our team.

What do school governors do?

Being a school governor is rewarding and offers the chance to see first-hand the impact you can have supporting young people’s futures.

You will have the opportunity to gain a variety of skills and experience, which many governors find beneficial in their wider lives and career development.

However, being a governor is also a responsibility which requires commitment to fulfil to the role effectively and become part of a team, including by:

  • Attending board meetings (6 per year, evenings), plus committee meetings depending on role (6 per year);
  • Participating in induction training and ongoing relevant training and development;
  • Getting to know the school, including undertaking monitoring visits at agreed times (approx 6 per year).

Please get in touch to find out more, and share with any other local groups.
