Mrs Utterson’s Almshouses is a Chippenham charity providing affordable, safe homes in the Lowden area of town. The charity is looking for for 3 volunteer trustees to join their Board of 7 trustees.
In 1884, Mrs Elizabeth Utterson paid for five Almshouses to be built on land that she had acquired from the Rev. John Rich, then Vicar of Chippenham. The original Indenture stated that the aim was to provide accommodation “… for aged or infirm women who would otherwise be probably compelled to end their days in the Union Workhouse.”
The trustee vacancies offer a great opportunity to make a difference in the town supporting the preservation of these attractive historic buildings as well ensuring safe and comfortable homes for the residents.
The role involves:
- Participation in the governance and administration of the charity
- Appointing of contractors
- Appointing beneficiaries/residents
- Planning the long-term maintenance of the buildings to preserve Mrs Utterson’s legacy for future generations
The role does not involve any work on the buildings themselves, this is always carried out by contractors appointed by trustees. The role may suit people who have experience of one or more of the following fields:
- Property management
- Bookkeeping/Accounting
- Business administration
- Liaison with the Charity Commission
