The Chippenham Cycle Network Development Group (Cycle Chippenham) has joined Cycling UK’s ‘Big Bike Revival’, holding its first ever cycle event, with a second event planned for Sunday 19th October, 9.30am, setting off from the Wiltshire History Centre, Chippenham.
With funding from Cycling UK, Cycle Chippenham is encouraging people to come along for a free bike ‘health and safety check’ and basic repairs, before joining Cycle Chippenham on a guided nature-themed cycle ride.
Cycle Chippenham’s Matthew Short said “These Big Bike Revival events are the perfect opportunity for people to give their old bikes and other cycles a new lease of life and encourage them to begin or continue cycling.
“The rides are family-friendly and ideal for adults looking to improve their fitness levels and cycling confidence. Cycling has many wellbeing benefits and the rides are a great way to meet new people and discover new local cycling routes.”
The event was initiated through a partnership between Cycle Chippenham and Chippenham Town Council’s Community Environmental forum, which provided free cycle accessories.
“We want to encourage as many people as possible to cycle, so our first ride has been nature themed, mostly off road and flat, with stops to ensure no one is left behind,” Matthew explained.
The events are also aimed at highlighting safe cycling routes, including improvements resulting from Cycle Chippenham’s work, so that people feel more confident about getting around on their bikes, whether for leisure, commuting, or cycling to school.
At the end of the rides participants can enjoy free refreshments at the Monkton Park’s Tenth Hole Tea Room as a reward for their ride.
